NEWS| SpiceJet may merge with JetLite

Consolidation is in the air, and there is buzz that SpiceJet may fly together with JetLite. CNBC-TV18’s Gopika Gopakumar reports that SpiceJet is most likely to go in for a merger or an acquisition with JetLite.

However, SpiceJet said a consolidation is not the only option to strengthen the industry. Analysts point out that since the industry is bleeding profusely, acquisitions will also mean a transfer of huge liabilities.
The aviation sector could soon see a third round of consolidation. Experts believe that among low cost carriers, SpiceJet is most likely to go in for a merger or an acquisition. That's mainly because the airline's financial condition has improved thanks to funding by Wilbur Ross. JetLite, experts say, may be in SpiceJet's crosshairs. Something SpiceJet does not seem opposed to, in principle.

NEWS| Jet Air-Kingfisher pact finally takes off

After an eight-month delay, the alliance between the country’s two largest private carriers, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, finally took off on July 1.

“To start with, both the airlines have started sharing infrastructure at the domestic airports that include Delhi and Mumbai,” a senior Kingfisher Airlines official told ET on condition of anonymity.

Apart from infrastructure sharing at airports, the code sharing between the two airlines will start this month. “The infrastructure and code sharing will reduce Kingfisher’s operational costs by 20-30%,” added the official. According to an official at Jet, code sharing on domestic and international flights will start soon, apart from joint fuel management and network rationalisation. E-mails and text messages sent to spokespersons of both companies remained unanswered.

Last October, Vijay Mallya and Naresh Goyal signed an agreement to significantly rationalise capacity and reduce costs at a time when prices of jetfuel had hit record highs. Landing and parking charges are high in India. Besides, jetfuel prices have moved upwards in the last two months.

NEWS| Over one lakh more seats allocated to foreign airlines

The government allocated 105,298 additional seats per week to foreign carriers on a reciprocal basis last year and would continue doing so this fiscal to enable greater connectivity, the Economic Survey for 2008-09 released Thursday said.

Apart from this, 26 new destinations were granted to designated carriers of 16 countries on reciprocal basis last fiscal, the survey said.

The designated airlines belong to Mexico, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Belgium, Germany, Qatar, Iran, Japan, Bhutan, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
Seat allocations were enhanced by increasing the number of flights, frequency and allowing these airlines to fly in bigger aircraft.

This was part of India’s bilateral air agreements, it explained.
According to the civil aviation ministry, India has bilateral air services pacts with over 100 countries, including developed nations like the US, Canada, Russia, France, Britain, Germany, Japan and Australia.

NEWS| SpiceJet, Kingfisher Expect to Break Even This Financial Year

Indian budget carrier SpiceJet Ltd. and Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. said Wednesday they expect to break even this financial year.

"It (the break-even) will be backed by our business plan, which primarily includes higher utilization of our capacity," chief commercial officer, Samyukth Sridharan, told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference.
"We also see fuel prices stabilizing this year," Mr. Sridharan said.
SpiceJet narrowed its net loss for the financial fourth-quarter ended March 31, mainly due to lower fuel prices and a reversal of foreign currency losses.
The carrier had a net loss of 78.2 million rupees ($1.63 million) for the quarter, compared with a net loss of 1.2 billion rupees a year earlier.
"The passenger increase compared to last year will be very high, since we had cut capacity at this time last year," Mr. Sridharan said.
Indian carriers cut capacity last year by deferring the delivery of new planes or withdrawing existing flights as the global economic downturn reduced demand for air travel.
SpiceJet, which operates a fleet of 19 Boeing Co. aircraft, expects to take delivery of three more Boeing planes by December 2010, starting in February, Mr. Sridharan said.
Kingfisher Airlines also expects to break even this financial year, a senior company executive said.
"This is based on our business projection and is in line with the industry looking up this year," the executive, who didn't wish to be named, said.
Kingfisher Airlines and its low-fare brand - Kingfisher Red - together operate 375 flights daily and "that will remain more or less the same this year," the executive said.
"We have no aircraft deliveries coming in this year," the executive said, adding that the airline currently has a load factor of about 70%.
Kingfisher has a fleet of 74 planes, mainly from the Airbus A320 family.

NEWS| Air India's low-cost arm goes domestic

Air India Express, a subsidiary of national carrier Air India, will enter the domestic low-cost space in a few months. The plan, however, is still in the proposal stage, said Tara Naidu, chief commercial officer, Air India Express.

The subsidiary already flies on Gulf, South Asia and Southeast Asia routes.
Naidu said, "We want to get into domestic operations because people prefer low-cost carriers to full-service ones. Our domestic operations will cover both metros and non-metros and our existing fleet, along with that of Air India, will be used for this venture," she said.
Air India's fleet stands at 68, of which 22 planes belong to Air India Express. Naidu said the parent's other resources, too, will be redeployed for the arm's domestic operations.
Air India Express operates 202 flights a week to 14 destinations outside India from 17 cities.

NEWS| Jet, Sahara headed for settlement

Jet Airways (India) Ltd is close to reaching an agreement with Sahara India Commercial Corp. Ltd, or SICCL, based on which it can pay around Rs300 crore to the latter to end a messy legal battle that has its origins in the April 2007 purchase of Sahara Airline Ltd by Jet Airways, the country’s second largest domestic airline by passenger traffic.

This comes ahead of an important Bombay high court hearing on 2 July. The court told the warring parties on 22 June to settle their dispute, or else it would pass an order.
Jet Airways is also working on a proposal to make some advance payments instead of instalments and is willing to pay some interest to avoid litigation, according to two executives with the carrier.

“Executives from Jet Airways and Sahara India are in discussions to reach an out-of-court settlement. Though the terms and agreements are not finalized, a consensus will be arrived (at) in (the) next 30 days,” said one of the executives. Neither of them agreed to be identified.
“The discussions are progressing towards a settlement, but nothing concrete has happened,” said a senior Sahara India executive, also on condition of anonymity.
The final round of the meetings for the settlement, led by the top brass of both Jet Airways and Sahara India, was scheduled for Monday.
