Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), a multi-national airline for Denmark, Norway and Sweden and a leading airline in the Scandinavian countries, recently decided to expand its operation in India in the coming months.
SAS has planned to increase few flights from India after April this year, which also includes starting new flight services from Mumbai. Currently the airline has three flights a week from New Delhi.
Talking exclusively to TravelBiz Monitor Lennart Paulsson, Director and General Manager (India), Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) informed in a recent meeting held in the capital that SAS is looking at the aviation market in India for assessing the growth of international travel for the coming days. All plans will be implemented on the basis of the market report. Besides, SAS will also put forward new marketing efforts through print advertisements and travel agents partnership. He further stated that the airline is seeking partnership with India’s national carrier, Air India to sign a through fare agreement.
SAS will seek through fare partnership with Air India in six domestic locations of India which include Bangalore, Hyderbad, Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. “Currently talks are on with Air India and the agreement will be implemented soon,” added Paulsson.
He further explained that passengers who travel to these six locations in India can obtain a complete (through) ticket fare, which is recognised by both the carriers. This will avoid the customer the inconvenience to buy tickets from the two airlines.

Best airline complaint ever?
Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson has thanked the author of a tirade slating food onboard as a "culinary journey of hell".
The anonymous email - which has whipped around the internet - is described by the UK Telegraph as one of the best airline complaints in the world.
Opening the lid of the main meal was like being given a "dead hamster as a Christmas present", it says.
The disgruntled passenger fired off the missive to Sir Richard after a disastrous flight from Mumbai to Heathrow on December 7 last year.
"Imagine being a 12-year-old boy Richard," the email says.
"Now imagine it's Christmas morning and you're sat their with your final present to open. It's a big one, and you know what it is. It's that Goodmans stereo you picked out the catalogue and wrote to Santa about.
"Only you open the present and it's not in there. It's your hamster Richard. It's your hamster in the box and it's not breathing. That's how I felt when I peeled back the foil and saw this.
The complaint continues: "…It's mustard Richard. MUSTARD. More mustard than any man could consume in a month. On the left we have a piece of broccoli and some peppers in a brown glue-like oil and on the right the chef had prepared some mashed potato. The potato masher had obviously broken and so it was decided the next best thing would be to pass the potatoes through the digestive tract of a bird."
The passenger also complained about the size and "baffling presentation" of the "criminal" cookie he was served
"It appears to be in an evidence bag from the scene of a crime. A CRIME AGAINST BLOODY COOKING. Either that or some sort of backstreet underground cookie, purchased off a gun-toting maniac high on his own supply of yeast."
The dessert was just as bad, with the passenger asking: "What sort of animal would serve a desert (sic) with peas in ?"
"I know it looks like a baaji but it's in custard Richard, custard," the passenger wrote.
"It must be the pudding. Well you'll be fascinated to hear that it wasn't custard. It was a sour gel with a clear oil on top. It's only redeeming feature was that it managed to be so alien to my palette that it took away the taste of the curry emanating from our miscellaneous central cuboid of beige matter."
The angry passenger then turns on the Virgin boss's eating habits.
"How can you live like this? I can't imagine what dinner round your house is like, it must be like something out of a nature documentary."
Sir Richard Branson telephoned the author of the letter and thanked him for his "constructive if tongue-in-cheek" email, according to London's Telegraph newspaper.

NEWS| Jet starts fresh price war in the skies
Jet Airways and its low-cost subsidiary JetLite have announced 50 per cent discount on their full fares in the economy class, taking the fare war in the domestic skies to an extreme level.
“The market was not picking up as expected despite lowering of fares. We are sure that this offer will excite lot more flyers,” said a Jet Airways spokesperson. This limited period offer, valid for travel till December 2009, is available from January 23 to 25. There is a straight 50 per cent discount on full fare, fuel surcharge and congestion surcharge, but passengers need to pay the full passenger service fee (PSF) of Rs 229, which goes to the airport operator.
For example, a Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways ticket priced at Rs 5,350 is now offered at an all-inclusive price of Rs 2,904 (Rs 1,250 base fare + Rs 1,425 fuel/congestion surcharge + Rs 229 PSF).
Meanwhile, a Mumbai-Delhi JetLite ticket earlier priced at Rs 2,845 is now available for Rs 1, 754 all-inclusive.
If you are lucky, you can also get a JetLite Mumbai-Delhi all-inclusive ticket for Rs 979 (base fare Rs 75 + fuel surcharge Rs 625+ PSF Rs 229).
Two days ago, GoAir had also offered massive discounts. The Wadia group airline is offering all-inclusive fares starting from Rs 1,500 onwards for travel between February 14 and June 30, 2009.

NEWS| Crew must chat with pilots to keep them awake
Cabin crew of all domestic airlines will now have to ‘interact’ with pilots over intercom every half hour.
This guideline has been issued by aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to ensure pilots don’t fall asleep while flying. DGCA is concerned over incidents of planes flying beyond their destination or deviating from the flight path after pilots fell asleep.
The DGCA circular, signed by joint director general A.K. Chopra, has six new guidelines on management of crew fatigue during flight.
Pilots have also been instructed to keep the volume of speakers on high so they can hear instructions from the ATC clearly.
The circular, a copy of which is with the HT, said there were few recent incidents where the cockpit crew operating an aircraft fell asleep and didn’t respond to calls from the air traffic control for 15-30 minutes.
In June last year, a Dubai-Jaipur-Mumbai flight of Air India overshot its destination. The aircraft, which was on autopilot, kept flying towards Goa instead of landing at Mumbai after the pilots fell asleep.

NEWS| Singapore Air, Virgin May Win India Investment Rights
Singapore Airlines Ltd., Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. and other carriers may win the right to buy into Indian airlines as the world's second-fastest-growing major economy plans to scrap investment restrictions.
India's government is considering allowing overseas airlines to own stakes in local carriers, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told reporters on Jan. 14. That would reverse a more than a decade-old rule that banned them from owning shares of domestic carriers.
With global traffic plunging amid a recession, India's move may give foreign airlines a slice of a market that's set to surge ninefold in the two decades to 2026, according to Airbus SAS. The plan will also give carriers such as Jet Airways (India) Ltd. and SpiceJet Ltd. access to cash and expertise amid a record $2 billion industrywide loss last year.
``In a global recession, foreign carriers will look at any opportunity where they can make a bit of money,'' said Viswanathan Vasudevan, who helps manage $300 million at Aquarius Investment Advisors Pte in Singapore. ``India seems to be one of the countries where you have some opportunity. That could be a big plus.''
Vasudevan may purchase Indian airline shares if the government eases restrictions for foreign carriers.
Seven new airlines have been set up in the past six years and passenger numbers doubled between 2004 and 2007, the government said.

NEWS| Singapore Airlines (SIA) is cutting more than 200 flights
Singapore Airlines (SIA) is cutting more than 200 flights to Australia, China, Europe and India in response to falling passenger numbers, the company and travel agents said on Friday.
Faced with the global economic slowdown, the carrier informed travel agents this week that 214 flights in all would be cut between now and March. It said Thursday that December passenger numbers were down 7.5 percent year-on-year.
“We don’t want to be flying half-empty planes around the world any longer than we have to, because it increases our cost burden at a time when we can least afford that,” company spokesman Stephen Forshaw told AFP. We want to make sure we match changes in capacity with the changes in demand that are occurring as a result of the economic slowdown,” he said.
Agents said flights would be cut between now and March to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Mumbai, New Delhi, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, London and Zurich. SIA said Thursday it carried 1.61 million passengers last month, compared with 1.74 million in December 2007. It also filled almost 80 percent of seats, down 4.4 percentage points year-on-year.
The city-state’s flag carrier said in November that net profit for the fiscal second quarter ending September fell 36.2 percent from the previous year, as the airline felt the pinch from the economic downturn.

NEWS| Paramount Airways’ promoters keen to hike stake to 100%
The promoters of the Coimbatore-based, Paramount Airways, are keen to increase their stake in the airline to 100 per cent by buying back the about 5 per cent stake held by others. The promoters hold currently 95 per cent stake.
Kotak Mahindra and Bennet & Coleman between them hold the 5 per cent stake .
“We are closed to the idea of private equity funding. All our other group companies are 100-per cent owned. So, we want to see the same in Paramount Airways also. We had divested share as a relationship building exercise. But now we have told the shareholders that if they are ready to sell their stake, we will buy it,” the Managing Director, Mr M. Thiagarajan, told Business Line.
It was in 2005 that India Growth Fund from Kotak Mahindra Group and Bennett & Coleman picked up a stake in Paramount Airways.
Declining to comment on the quantum of funds required, Mr Thiagarajan said the buyback would be funded through other group companies.
Meanwhile, the airline has drawn up plans to expand its presence in western India. “The thrust in western India will begin in April this year and we hope to be a dominant market player there both in terms of number of flights operated and market share,” he said.

NEWS| Airlines bound to care for passengers during delays
Fog over north India has led to long delays in flights and much inconvenience to passengers in recent times. Consumers at the domestic and international airport complain of long waiting periods, no information on flights and sometimes, even non-availability of water at the airport.
According to the new civil aviation requirements (CAR) issued by the director general of civil aviation (DGCA), passengers stranded at airports are entitled to an array of facilities. For example, the CAR says that where passengers are stranded, they should be provided with meals, beverages, communication facilities and hotel rooms for the night, if necessary. The airline is also liable to meet the special needs of persons with reduced mobility and those accompanying them.
If a passenger who reports to the airline counter in time is denied boarding, the passenger should be offered compensation and full assistance to his destination. In case of over-booking, the airline can invite some passengers to give up their seats for benefits, which are intimated in advance, which should be a minimum of Rs12,000 for international flights and Rs6,000 for domestic flights. The passenger would then also be entitled to a refund or a free flight to his original point of destination. Offloaded passengers would be entitled to free meals, hotel accommodation and communication facilities.
In case of delay in flights two to three hours long, the airline must serve meals and refreshments, hotel accommodation with transfers if necessary and free communication facilities. If the flight is delayed by more than five hours, the consumer must be given the choice of taking a full refund on his ticket, with an additional offer to fly the passenger back to his destination, free of cost.
However, the implementation at the ground level is not up to the mark.

NEWS| Air France-KLM now eyes Kingfisher minority stake
With a Kingfisher and Jet Airlines tie-up apparently dead in the water, Kingfisher is considering other potential allies, and were recently revealed to have been in preliminary talks with Air France–KLM
As the Indian governments clear the way for foreign investors to own up to 25% stake in Indian carriers, Kingfisher has turned its eye for an airline partners overseas.
After finalising a deal with Alitalia for a 25% stake with a price tag of EUR322 million, it appears that Air France–KLM are in preliminary talks with Kingfisher for a 20-25% minority stake in the Indian carrier.
With the liberalising plans for Indian carriers rumours have been flying surrounding many airlines and potential international suitors.
In recent days Jet Airways’ name has been tied with Etihad, while British Airways has been hinted at pursuing a GoAir minority stake.
“There is a more reasonable case now [for foreign investment] than there was three-four years ago,” said Praful Patel, the Indian Aviation Minister, in a report recently.
Indian carriers are expecting to post an industry loss for the financial year 2008/09 of INR80 billion.

NEWS| Kingfisher grounds 20% flights
Kingfisher Airlines, India's second-largest airline, has slashed 20 per cent of its domestic flights and is now operating around 440 flights. The company, which recently started its overseas flight connecting Bangalore to London, is also understood to be initiating discussions with Singapore Airlines for a code-sharing pact. The airline recently got the required nod for increasing its overseas flights by connecting Mumbai to Hong Kong and Singapore; and Bangalore to Colombo, Male and Dubai.
Industry sources indicate that Kingfisher’s Bangalore-London flight is operating at a little over 50 per cent load factor and the basic drawback on this operation is that there are no adequate connecting flights for a seamless travel. While the company did confirm that it has slashed 20 per cent of its domestic flights and its Bangalore-London flight is operating at a 50 per cent load factor, it offered not to comment on the code sharing discussions. The company is going through a overhaul of its intended plans to fly overseas even as it cancelled its much discussed direct flights to San Francisco from Bangalore.
The airline, which is hoping to be operationally profitable for the month of December, is understood to have leveraged debt more than 10 times on an equity base of Rs 256 crore, even as it tries to raise Rs 1,600 crore through equity dilution.

NEWS| Indian Doctor helps deliver baby on trans-Atlantic flight
It's safe to say that Dr. Natarajan Raman, a radiation oncologist from Woodbury, doesn't usually get to deliver happy news like he did Wednesday morning.
"I'm usually dealing with patients at the end of life, so it was a very pleasant surprise dealing with the beginning of life," he said. "But I'm not planning to switch specialties."
Raman was on his way home from a trip to India when he helped deliver a baby girl on Northwest Airlines flight 59 from Amsterdam to Boston. As the plane soared over Canada, he was sipping a cup of tea and reading the newspaper when a call for any medical personnel came across the intercom.
A young woman was having contractions and was ready to give birth. Raman, who works at Hennepin County Medical Center, and a doctor from Massachusetts, Paresh Thakker, told the pilot that the baby would likely be delivered before the plane could make an emergency landing. They used the plane's emergency medical kit and the baby girl was born about 10 minutes later.
Even though it had been almost 20 years since he delivered a baby, Raman, who had been in India attending his 25th medical school reunion, said his memory was still intact.
The flight landed at 10:29 a.m., about 90 minutes after the baby was born. The mother and baby were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where they were in good condition.
Chris Kelly, a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, which acquired Northwest in October, said the company does not impose travel restrictions on pregnant women, though it recommends that women in their eighth month of pregnancy consult a doctor before flying.

NEWS| Low airfares bring cheers to industry
The new year has brought some good news for the air travellers. The slashing of fares by domestic airlines up to 65% has given the tourism industry a reason to smile and the corporates to rejoice. The fares have been cut down in view of the decline in the air fuel price as a cascading effect of the fall in crude oil rates in the international market.
The sharp decline in the shadow of recession would increase the frequency of the long distance travellers and corporate fliers in the city during this peak season.
"The direct connectivity from far-off destinations offered by airlines would increase the passengers flow here," said Gunjan Singhal, a private travel agent. Corporate queries have increased manifolds since the drop in airfares, he added.
Premier airlines like Kingfisher and Jet have slashed their domestic fares up to 65% on all the destinations from Jaipur. National carrier Indian Airlines too has slashed the domestic fare by 35% to give the air traffic a boost.
A low-cost carrier has decided to reintroduce its Rs 99 scheme on all destinations from Jaipur after a brief gap of six months. Ten flights, which were withdrawn by different airlines six months back due to recession in the aviation industry, are likely to be resumed in coming months, hinted an airport official.
SpiceJet has recently started their services to Kolkata and Goa aiming at providing a complete travel solution to tourists in the region.

International capacity dropped by 1.0%. The November international passenger load factors stood at 72.7% which is a decline of approximately 3 percentage points over the same month last year.
“The 13.5% drop in international cargo is shocking. As air cargo handles 35% of the value of goods traded internationally, it clearly shows the rapid fall in global trade and the broadening impact of the economic slowdown. By comparison, this is largest drop since 2001, in the aftermath of September 11,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
“The industry is now shrinking by all measures. The 1.0% capacity cut in international passenger markets in November could not keep pace with the 4.6% fall in passenger demand. We can expect deep losses in the fourth quarter,” said Bisignani.
International Passenger Traffic
The November passenger decline of 4.6% is a considerable worsening from both the 1.3% demand contraction in October and the 2.9% fall in September.
Asia-Pacific carriers face the most difficult operating environment with a 9.7% decline in November, following a 6.1% contraction in October. The region also had the most aggressive capacity cuts at -5.1%. While Chinese domestic traffic rebounded after the Olympics, travel to and from international markets continues to decline, reflecting the weakness in both global trade and consumer confidence.
North American carriers saw international traffic decline by 4.8% - the second largest drop among the regions. Until August, the region’s carriers had been shifting capacity to international markets. With the near collapse of the investment banking sector and consequent reductions in business travel, North Atlantic travel slumped. Carriers have started to cut international capacity with a 0.8% drop in November (following 0.4% growth in October)
European carriers saw international traffic drop by 3.4% as all the region’s major markets (intra-Europe, North Atlantic, and Asia) slumped.
Smaller emerging markets fared better. African carriers saw traffic decline by 1.6%. This is a considerable improvement from the 12.9% drop in October, resulting from stronger intra-African traffic. Middle Eastern carriers saw traffic increase by 5.6%. This is up from 3.5% growth in October, but represents a step-change from the double-digit expansion that characterized growth prior to the current financial crisis. Latin American carriers saw a slight decline in growth to 3.3% (compared to 4.5% growth in October), buoyed by the region’s positive, albeit slower, economic growth.
International Freight Traffic
Asia-Pacific carriers (representing 44.6% of global freight) saw freight traffic fall by 16.9% in November—the largest decline of any region. As freight accounts for a larger percentage of revenues for the Asia-Pacific carriers, fourth quarter profits for the region’s carriers will be disproportionately (and negatively) impacted by the downturn in the global air freight market.
Double-digit freight declines were also experienced by Latin American carriers (-15.7%), North American carriers (-14.4%) and European carriers (-11.0%). Freight traffic for Middle Eastern carriers turned negative (-1.6%), following 1.0% growth in October. African carriers, while being the only region posting freight growth (2.2%), saw a decline from the 3.0% growth posted in October. Plummeting business confidence and the continuing turmoil in financial markets indicates that the worsening trend will be continued in December.
“With no end in sight for the worsening global economy, the 2008 gloom will carry over into the new year. Relief in the oil price has been outstripped by the falls in demand and capacity cuts are not keeping pace. The industry is back in intensive care. Improving efficiency everywhere will be theme for 2009,” said Bisignani.
