NEWS| KF defers Dubai plan till July
Kingfisher Airlines has put off its plans to fly to Dubai until June-July. The airline was all set to connect Bangalore to Dubai beginning March 7.
It has now suspended its plans owing to the economic slowdown that has gripped the Middle East and plummeting air fares.
According to sources in the travel industry, “Kingfisher had looked at a provisional date of launch for its Dubai services in April this year, which also got cancelled. Now the launch date will be somewhere in June or July.’’
The source added that if the market does not pick up by then the launch could be further postponed by another month or so.
Aviation analysts point out that the current low pricing levels of west Asian carriers like Emirates and Etihad Airways as well as excess capacity on this route could have also been a factor in Kingfisher’s decision.
At present, return ticket prices to Dubai cost Rs 15,000-16,000, a 20-25% drop from normal times.
On the capacity front Emirates alone operates 20 flights per week out of Bangalore.

NEWS| Virgin Atlantic to pull out its Mumbai-London flights
Virgin Atlantic has decided to pull out its Mumbai-London flights from May 3, 2009 onwards. Termination letters have been issued to its ground staff and cabin crew based in Mumbai.
According to a report in Times of India (ToI) by Manju V, “Our Mumbai-London daily flights will be terminated from May 3, 2009 onwards. As and when the economy looks up and the sector turns profitable, we will come back,” said Neha Lidder Ganju, Senior Marketing Manager (India), Virgin Atlantic. However the airline will continue its Delhi-London flights.
The airline had launched its Mumbai-London flights in March 2005 with Airbus 340-600. During that period, flying on the Mumbai-London route turned cheap as three more airlines- Jet Airways, Air Sahara and bmi had launched flights on this route to compete with Air India and British Airways. Even as Virgin Atlantic increased its frequency from three flights a week to daily services by 2005 end, cut-throat competition led to a drastic reduction in launch fares. When the airline launched, the economy fare for a Mumbai-London return was Rs 27,000. When Virgin Atlantic became daily in December 2005, the return fare came down to Rs 17,777. The fare has now come down to Rs 9,990 for a Mumbai-London return ticket on airlines like British Airways and Jet Airways.

NEWS| Silver lining: Air traffic shows sign of revival in Feb
Domestic air travel has finally shown some revival sign after several months of double digit falls. Despite airlines sharply hiking fares in February over January, the month actually saw more people flying within the country.
According to the aviation ministry, January with its rock bottom fares saw 33.26 lakh domestic flyers. And February, when fares had almost doubled, this figure has actually gone up to 33.36 lakh. On yearly basis, February 2009 over 2008 has seen a 8% fall in traffic a single digit fall after several months of double digit losses.
According to aviation analysts, the full service sector has an overcapacity with nearly 120 aircraft between Jet, Kingfisher and AI (domestic) flying within the country. This figure, says the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, may need to be pruned further.

NEWS| Akal Air steps in to run new routes from Birmingham to Amritsar
A new air link to northern India from Birmingham International Airport is being launched – shortly after the withdrawal of national carrier Air India left the city without a direct link to the country.
Akal Air, a trading division of Air Sylhet, will be running twice-weekly flights to Amritsar – the most popular Indian destination from Birmingham – passing through Vienna.
Air India dropped its direct Birmingham-Amritsar flight at the end of last year. It had been hoped the flights would return this summer, but the airline announced last week it would be abandoning Birmingham for the moment to focus on its routes to Heathrow.
Because of regulation by the Indian government, only Air India is allowed to run direct flights from Birmingham to Indian airports, so firms looking to take advantage of the demand left by Air India have had to go via other airports.
The Akal Air flights have an hour stopover in Vienna, but do not involve changing planes. There are two other indirect routes to India from Birmingham, run by Turkmenistan Airlines and Air Slovakia.
Business groups and politicians from the West Midlands are lobbying the Indian government to relax air legislation and let other firms replace the direct route from the city to Amritsar.

NEWS| PM's office in sky from April 1
The spanking new, highly-secure office in the sky is now finally ready for 'inauguration' after some delay. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may well get a whiff or two of the plush environs but it will really be the new PM who will enjoy the smooth ride after taking over in May-June.
The three wide-bodied VVIP Boeing Business Jets, ordered in October 2005 at a total cost of Rs 937 crore, are likely to be formally inducted into IAF on April 1. Equipped as they are with high-tech self-protection suites (SPS) to guard against missiles, encrypted satellite communication facilities and advanced navigation aids, the highly-customized aircraft will ensure the PM as well as President travel in fully secure comfort like never before.
"The first flight by President Pratibha Patil on one of the jets on probably April 1 will mark their formal inauguration," said a senior defence ministry officer.
Asked whether the PM would take one of these jets if he goes for the G-20 summit in London, on April 2, the officer said, "The scheduling process for the first VVIP flight is still being tied-up. I have no information about subsequent flights." If the PM does indeed take the aircraft to the summit, also being attended by US President Barack Obama, he will have his own desi version of the American 'Air Force One' to brandish about. However, some heat and dust has already been generated over whether US inspectors will be allowed to inspect the three Indian VVIP jets, as reported by TOI earlier.
India has signed a specific end-use monitoring agreement with US for the three VVIP jets, which is required under American domestic laws. Being a government-to-government deal, the contract is governed by Pentagon's 'Golden Sentry' EUMA programme, which focuses on 'cradle-to-grave' verifications. The defence ministry is yet to come clean on whether or not India has got around the conditionality of physical verifications.

From the Coach| Flaunt your Profile/Resume
What an Idea sirji!
Resume T-Shirts. With the current state of affairs, this does evoke a chuckle.
I am also reminded of an ad, where the job-seeker gives out his resume to every passenger on the flight and then with some copies left starts handing them out to the stewardess.
Am I suggesting that? No, but I am suggesting the general principle.
If you are looking for a job, then you must do the following, if you aren't already:

NEWS | SpiceJet shares up on consolidation talks with GoAir
The shares of budget carrier SpiceJet were up nearly 10 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange Monday on reports that it was in talks with another low-cost airline GoAir for consolidating operations or even a possible merger.
Some 30 minutes before the closing bell, the SpiceJet scrip was trading at Rs.13.42, up 9.46 per cent over the previous close at Rs.12.26. GoAir, owned by the Wadia group, is an unlisted company.
SpiceJet, however, declined comment on the issue. "Our company policy is not to confirm or deny any such speculative claims," said a statement issued by the airline. GoAir also declined to react.
Jet Airways, controlled by Naresh Goyal, and Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher had also entered into a strategic alliance last year in what had set other airlines into discussing similar moves.

NEWS| Virgin Atlantic to stop flights to Mumbai
Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Airways has been forced to slam the brakes on its Mumbai-London operations from May thanks to a double whammy of the economic slowdown and excess capacity.
This is the fourth international airline in the last year alone to cease operations from the city.
“We have decided to temporarily suspend operations to Mumbai with effect from May 4. We are suspending this service until rational conditions re-emerge and it can resume service on this important route,” confirmed Neha Lidder Ganju, Senior Marketing Manager- India, Virgin Atlantic Airways.
The exact number of job cuts could not be ascertained but the company has said that its cabin crew, airport staff and cargo staff would be affected as a result.
Virgin Atlantic has stated that while it performed satisfactorily in its first three years, the overall traffic between Heathrow and Mumbai fell 18 per cent last year. In addition, there was an “irrational level” of capacity on the route. “As a result, Virgin Atlantic and presumably other carriers have been losing money. This would be unsustainable at the best of times, but is ruinous in current conditions,” the carrier said in an email response.
The airline operates daily direct flights from both Mumbai and Delhi to Heathrow. The Delhi link will remain intact as it has not been hit by idle capacity and still remains sustainable.
Virgin’s exit comes at a time when Indian carriers such as the state-owned Air India as well as private airlines such as Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines are aggressively pursuing their international operations, especially to European and South Asian destinations.

NEWS| Bikaner set to have own airport
Giving wings to the long-cherished dream of having air connectivity to this town, the chief minister, Ashok Gehlot, laid the foundation stone of the civil airport terminal on Monday afternoon.
The airport would be made near the existing air force base at Nal, about 13 km from the city. Due to the hectic schedule of chief minister the ceremony was organized at the Dr Karni Singh Stadium.
The chief minister landed at the Border Security Force (BSF) helipad and headed straight to the Karni Singh Stadium. Addressing a crowd, the CM said that the proposed airport would boost tourism and industries in and around Bikaner.
He said that his government has signed a memorandum of understanding with a UAE-based company to develop a Rs 45,000-crore silicon complex in Bikaner. He said that the Centre would give a subsidy of Rs 10,000 crore in the silicon project. It would employ about 10,000 persons directly. The chairman of the Airports Authority of India, V P Agarwal, said that the proposed airport would have a 106 X7 6 mt apron for simultaneous use of 250-seat aircraft.
Agarwal asked the state government to provide an additional 35 acre against the proposed 20 acre land so that additional facilities and future expansion of the airport is ensured. The ceremony was attended by the government chief whip Virendra Beniwal, former chief of state Congress B D Kalla, former irrigation minister Devi Singh Bhati, Gopal Joshi and industrialist Shiv Ratan Agarwal.

NEWS| Diageo not only suitor for Kingfisher Airlines: Mallya
Vijay Mallya, Chairman of the UB Group, speaking on the group search for a strategic partner for Kingfisher Airlines, said he is in discussion with more than one suitor and that Diageo is one on them. He said it is premature to speculate on the timeframe of the deal.
Mallya added he has already signed a confidentiality agreement and is in talks with a PE investor for raising USD 400 million for Kingfisher Airlines. He said negotiations with PE investor can continue regardless of FIPB approvals.
"I am in conversation with more than one suitor. Diageo is a fine company with an excellent portfolio of global brands. We are in active discussion. But I think it is rather premature to speculate on a potential deal either in terms of timeframe––will it or won’t it happen?," Vijay Mallya said.

NEWS| Air India sets up global aviation hub at Frankfurt
In a major initiative towards strengthening its global network, Air India will make its first-ever international hub operational at Frankfurt this month-end, launching scissor operations to and from North America with a brand new fleet of Boeing aircraft.
At Frankfurt, a passenger flying from Delhi to Newark will be quickly transferred to the Mumbai-Newark flight and a person travelling to Chicago from Mumbai would have to change the aircraft on the Delhi-Chicago route.
It will take about 19 hours, including the changeover time at Frankfurt, for a passenger to reach the US cities from India.
"The Frankfurt hub will become operational on March 29, the beginning of the summer schedule, for some of Air India's flights and will offer more convenient connections to a larger originating traffic," airline's Executive Director Jitender Bhargava said here.
AI's decision to have a global hub in Europe follows a similar hub being operated by Jet Airways at Brussels.
