NEWS| Qatar Airways suspends flights to Nagpur

Qatar Airways, which has been operating a direct flight between Nagpur and Doha for the last two years, has decided to suspend the flight from May 15 due to poor load factor from the Indian city’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.

Subscribe to mytravelcareer.com by Email

Qatar Airways will be the second airline to suspend its international operations from Nagpur after India’s state-run carrier Air India, which suspended its Hyderabad-Nagpur-Bangkok flight an year ago.

Qatar Airways launched its twice-weekly flights to Nagpur in September 2007. Initially, the flight received a tremendous response from passengers as it was the only flight with connections to cities like London, Washington, New York and Paris from Nagpur. However, for the last few months the global economic slowdown and the poor load factor due to rising air fares had badly affected operations of the flight, sources added.

A senior official of the airline said on condition of anonymity, “The flight was being operated with very poor load factor for the last few months. The airline has incurred losses in hundreds of thousands and is planning to withdraw the Nagpur-Doha flights permanently.”

NEWS| Air France passengers allege racial bias

Over 50 Indian passengers flying Air France had a "harrowing" time at Paris Airport after their aircraft developed a technical problem, and complained on Tuesday (May 12) on reaching Mumbai Airport that they were victims of "racial" profiling.

The passengers, who spent 28 hours in Paris, said they were confined to a lounge at the airport there from 10 PM on Sunday till 7 AM the next morning and given "hardly any food and water".

The passengers, on their way to Mumbai from the US via Paris, said while the foreigners were taken to hotels shortly after their plane returned to the Paris airport due to apparent technical problem following a four-hour flight, they were taken to the lounge and given just a bottle of water and a sandwich. Giving details of their "harrowing" time, one of the travellers, Vineeta Sengupta said, “No foreigner would have been treated like the way we were treated. People were lying down on the floor over there (at a place at the airport) where immigration takes place".

Accusing Air France of "racial" profiling, a girl passenger said that the officials there even had threatened that they would be handed over to the police if they did not stop protesting. Sengupta said the 53 to 54 Indian passengers were later "huddled out" of the airport on a "group visa", which the authorities could have provided much earlier, and taken to a hotel. No reason has officially been given for the delay.

The passengers, who were in transit and did not have a visa for Paris, said the flight--AF 218--took off from the French capital with 169 passengers and 12 crew on board but returned to the airport after just about four hours in flight. "The sandwich was so bad that one could not eat it," complained one of the travellers. "We had to beg for water. There was no information, no facility to even ring up".

NEWS| Salaries will be delayed: Jet airways

In the wake of economic slowdown when travel has been badly hit, the airline like all others has done everything to stay afloat like reducing fleet sizes, cutting flights and salaries. Last year it laid of 1,900 employees and had to take them back after a lot of drama. A Jet spokesperson did not comment on the delatyed salary e-mail where it said the pay would come around May 5, calling it an internal matter of the company. PEOPLE| Arvind Jadhav takes over as Air India chief

Arvind Jadhav Monday took over as the chairman and managing director of National Aviation Co (Nacil), which operates national carrier Air India.

A 1978 batch IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre, Jadhav was officially named for the post May 1. Prior to this, he was principal secretary of the Karnataka government's infrastructure development department.

He played an active role in introducing the public-private partnership (PPP) model to develop the Bangalore International Airport Ltd, a greenfield airport project.
Jadhav took charge from E.K. Bharat Bhushan, who was heading the aviation company for an interim period after the government, unhappy with the performance of Air India, removed the chairman Raghu Menon from the post last week.

However, the government is yet to decide on Menon's new role. Currently, he is on leave till late next month, said an Air India spokesperson.

The change at the helm has come in the backdrop of Air India's falling market share even though it is going through a major fleet expansion programme to induct 111 new Boeing and Airbus aircraft over the next few years.

NEWS| SpiceJet eyes 5-year growth plan

At a time when aviation industry is bleeding and in deep trouble, Gurgaon-based low cost carrier SpiceJet has formed a separate internal team for analysing the growth path for the next five years and different targets for the carrier.

The team, headed by CEO Sanjay Aggarwal, is mulling whether the carrier should go for Boeing or Airbus fleets for its requirement over the next five years. It is also analysing cost cutting measures, and deliberating on its international foray and buyout of a local carrier. It is also working on the fare structure over the next quarter.

Aggarwal said the airline is chalking out plans for the next five years in view of the current downturn. “The decision on fleet will take few months more as it’s a long process,” he said. Currently, SpiceJet operates 19 Boeing planes.

SpiceJet was said to raise fares when Kingfisher and Jet Airways hiked fares by Rs 300 per ticket a fortnight back, but a sudden and steep 70% cut in Air-India fares changed the complete plan. “Competition is important and we will have to act according to competition. It has forced us not to increase airfares in the last fortnight, though we have increase fares in few selective routes,” Aggarwal said.

Mark Martin, senior advisor, KPMG, told ET that domestic carriers should go back to the board room and draw fresh strategies to weather the upcoming turbulence in the aviation sector. If they don’t act now, then tough times are waiting for them.

NEWS| SilkAir to fly five times a week to Hyderabad

Taking over from its parent airline SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will start its five-day a week operations to Hyderabad from June 15, airline's officials said.

Singapore Airlines, which currently flies to Hyderabad thrice a week, would hand over its operations to SilkAir. The south Indian city is the fourth destination in the county after Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore.

The transfer of operations would present customers a wider choice of flight times as SilkAir will offer five times weekly services to Hyderabad for a start.

This will be increased to a daily frequency during the Northern Winter Schedule from 26 October 2009. The flights are subject to governmental approvals and slot availability.

NEWS| SpiceJet signs outsourcing deal with Boeing

Gurgaon-based budget carrier SpiceJet has hit upon an idea pioneered by Sunil Bharti Mittal in the telecom sector.

The company is all set to replicate Bharti's model of outsourcing several operations hoping to see similar miracles for the beleaguered airline.

SpiceJet, which spends between 5-10 per cent of its total operating cost on spares and servicing, has signed an outsourcing deal with Boeing.

As per the details of the agreement, the deal spares will now be purchased and inventory will be managed by Boeing. This will bring down SpiceJet's manpower and material costs substantially.

Airlines are doing everything in their power to keep their costs down and even though Spicejet's is trying to do the same, Boeing is very keen to finalise the deal for very different reasons.
Boeing's eagerness to help ease SpiceJet's burden may have been prompted by the airline's move to look at its rival Airbus for its fleet order.

NEWS| Foreign carriers look to India again

Some foreign carriers are once again looking at India as a destination, even as others continue to prune their connectivity to India. Air Arabia, the first low fare carrier in West Asia has added one flight each on Friday and Sunday from Delhi to Dubai, taking the total number of flights every week to nine.

SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will commence operations to Hyderabad on 15 June 2009, taking over from Singapore Airlines which currently flies to this Indian city three times a week. However, Indian travel agents, who have been agitating against Singapore Airlines’ zero-commission policy, will extend their boycott to SilkAir.

For starters, SilkAir will offer five flights a week to Hyderabad against the current three being offered by Singapore Airlines. This will be increased to daily during the Northern Winter Schedule from 26 October 2009. The flights are subject to governmental approvals and slot availability.

A 20 April report from wire service Press Trust of India quoted Nordic airline Finnair as saying that would resume its Mumbai-Helsinki service starting 18 October, a sign of confidence that demand for business travel between Asia and Europe would increase.

NEWS| Kingfisher negotiating Rs 2,000 cr loan from SBI

Kingfisher Airlines is negotiating with State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest bank, for a working capital loan of over Rs 2,000 crore. The money will be used for clearing fuel bills. SBI executives, however, said the sanctioned amount was likely to be lower.

Industry sources said the carrier owed over Rs 620 crore to BPCL and HPCL, besides Rs 160 crore to IOC. However, Kingfisher Airlines is not the only company with oil dues. “Raising funds is an ongoing issue and because we are bound by confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, it will be inappropriate to offer any comment at this stage,” a Kingfisher spokesperson said.
The payment of aviation turbine fuel dues has been an issue for all major airlines. On October 23, 2008, oil companies gave airlines a breather on dues worth Rs 2,900 crore, which were to be paid in six monthly instalments till March 31, 2009. Subsequent purchases from the date of that announcement were given credit of 90 days. Sources said airlines were defaulting both on instalments and current purchases.
Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways and state-owned Air India started this financial year with accumulated dues of Rs 4,000 crore to oil companies and airports, sources said.

In October last year, both the airlines signed an agreement to help them to significantly rationalise and reduce costs and provide improved standards of service and a wider choice of air travel options to the consumers.

The scope of the alliance included joint fuel management, common ground handling, cross selling of flight inventories, code shares on domestic and international flights and joint network rationalisation and synergies.

The Jet Airways spokesperson said that the airline is not in a position to offer any information on the status of its deal with the Bahrain-based Gulf Air which had apparently decided to return the leased aircraftto Jet Airways after the wet lease gets over.

It is learnt that Gulf Air had indicated to Jet Airways that it plans to return four long range Boeing 777-300ER aircraft once the wet lease period gets over in six months. According to the agreement, Gulf Air was to convert the wet lease to dry lease after six months.

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. - Lao Tzu

One of the many benefits of a holiday and that of an adversity is that you find yourself.

I have found that on every holiday that I undertake I invariably discover or sometimes re-discover myself. I know a lot of other people who come back from a holiday and have only pictures to show for it, me, on the other hand has me to show for it.

People who meet me after the holiday invariably remark how much better I sound and truly, I feel much better. Not only for the rest that the holiday accorded but the very act of submerging myself in a new environ is an act of change and all change is a little disconcerting. It makes one look at oneself in a critical fashion, assess what one likes one doesn't, experiment and at the same time look for anything that might bring a fleeting moment of peace from the tried and tested.

NEWS| Indigo airline adds six more flights to its operation

Low-cost airline IndiGo on Wednesday announced to add six more flights to its operation even as the domestic demand continues to be weak.

Rival SpiceJet is also planning to introduce similar number of flights by the end of May. While IndiGo is expected to add five more aircraft to its existing fleet, SpiceJet is scheduled to take the delivery of one airplane by the end of the current fiscal.
The development comes at a time when private network carriers are rationalising routes and reducing their fleet size to contain losses.
"We have had highest load factor (average passengers per available seat kilometre) in the market in the recent time. Apart from this other economic performance is such that we have to expand. There is till huge demand for low-fare travel," IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh told ET.
Consulting firm Centre for Asia Pacific and Aviation (CAPA) India head Kapil Kaul, however, said that the two budget carriers SpiceJet and IndiGo need to hold on their capacities to ensure increased fleet utilization.
