AIRLINE NEWS| India's first seaplane operations to take off in October

For the first time in India's aviation history, seaplane operations are likely to begin in Andaman and Nicobar islands in October this year, with state-owned Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited (PHHL) planning to launch its services.

"We plan to launch seaplane operations by October 15," PHHL CMD R K Tyagi said at a seminar on helicopter operations here, adding that the operations would be launched jointly by the public sector chopper firm and the island administration to operate sorties for tourists and inter-island movements.

The PHHL, which currently operates helicopter services in the group of islands, also plans similar services in Goa and Lakshadweep after the Andaman operations settle down.
The public sector chopper firm plans to wet-lease one seaplane, likely from a Mauritius-based company, for one year.

The cost of the project, which is to be shared 50:50 with the island administration, would be about Rs six to eight crore.

AIRLINE NEWS| AirAsia To Fly To Three New Routes In Southern India

AirAsia, Asia's leading low cost airline, will fly to Kochi, Trivandrum and Kolkata come December, in a move to expand its network in Southern India.

AsiaAsia Group's Regional Head of Commercial Kathleen Tan said AirAsia was flying now to Tiruchirappalli and would spread its wings to other destinations in Southern India this year.
"For the fourth quarter and next year, AirAsia will focus on building our network in India where there is huge demand," she told Bernama in an interview on Monday in conjunction with AirAsia's 48-hour sales.

Elaborating on the Indian sector, Tan said AirAsia was looking at tapping destinations like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and AirAsia's long-haul affiliate, AirAsia X, would look further at Mumbai and Delhi.

She said the Tiruchirappalli sector received overwhelming response from the population in Southern India who visited Kuala Lumpur and used it as a gateway to enter Southeast Asia.
Tan said the low cost carrier had opened up the flying experience as people not just travel for holidays but also for shopping or medical treatment.

She said AirAsia's low cost model also boosted domestic tourism as the airline's huge network enabled more Malaysians to take short domestic holidays to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri and Tawau.

NEWS| Ministry nixes lockout option for Air India management

Domestic air travellers came within a whisker of their travel plans going completely awry this festive season on Monday. An angry AI management was contemplating declaring an indefinite lockout as talks between Delhi-based striking pilots and CMD Arvind Jadhav broke down after a fiery meeting here on Monday on the issue of salary cuts. It's learnt that late on Monday night aviation minister Praful Patel prevailed on the airline to give talks another chance and not go in for such drastic action.

The government is now going to see how many pilots report for work on Tuesday, before cracking down. "There is not going to be any lockout. We cannot allow passenger suffering. At the same time, we are taking all steps to restore AI's health. Pilots must report for work and we will sort out the issue of wage cuts though talks. We will advise the management to enter into a comprehensive dialogue with all sections of employees and the strike must end immediately,'' aviation secretary M M Nambiar said

My Eclat Coach: Should You Respond To Everything?

This is a difficult one for me.
I dont have any empirical data to base my theory on, but I guess you can call it coming of age.
If you asked me this question 10 years back or even 5 I would have said an empathic 'YES'
Today, with all the so called experiences behind me, I am not so sure.

Some people might argue that to not engage life is akin to refusing to live.

The fact that this is a 3-D interactive set up is what makes all this so real. I know, this is almost on the verge of some spiritual discourse, but if you can spare another minute those guys aren't so off the mark.

You have heard of 'pick you battles' or 'doing nothing is also doing something' or the one I have seen as a poster in many an educational institutes, 'Give me the courage to change the things I can, the serenity to accept the ones I cant and the wisdom to know the difference'.  All of these and more are arguing your right to disengage once-in-a-while.

There will be things you have no control over (for the ones who are firm believers in destiny to the smallest detail, you have control over nothing) but I am talking about things you seemingly have control over, could do something about and taking that thought further can choose to do nothing.

will you belittle yourself by doing nothing? will you belittle the task or the individual you are ignoring?

will you feel sometime later in life that if only I had not let that simple digression go unpunished, the larger damage could have been averted?

what do you feel?

Do you ignore many a things on a daily basis?

If you do, then how do you decide?

On what parameters do you choose?

leave examples in the comments

AIRLINE NEWS| Lightning hits landing system at Mumbai airport

Tuesday's thundershowers accompanied by vicious lightning rendered the all-weather instrument-landing system (ILS) of Mumbai airport useless, the first time this has happened since the deluge of July 26, 2005.As a result 11 flights were diverted while others were delayed by at least 45 minutes.

"As the glide path of the ILS on runway 27 of main runway 09:27 was not working, nine flights were diverted to Ahmedabad airport between 7:45pm and 9pm," a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited (Mial) said. (A source, however, said 11 flights were diverted: six Air India, one Kingfisher, one Jet, one GoAir, one SpiceJet, and a chartered flight.)
The lightning was so severe that it affected the lightning arrester barriers in the ILS. The problem was rectified by Wednesday morning by engineers of the Airports Authority of India, which installs and maintains the systems at airports across India.

Even secondary runway 14 of 14:32 could not be used on Tuesday owing to the rains.

AIRLINE NEWS| No Tuesday noon flights from Mumbai from Oct 25

If you have already booked a ticket to Delhi or London on a Tuesday afternoon after October 25, you might want to reschedule.

With the planned closure of the intersection of the cross runways at Mumbai airport on Tuesdays, flights on these sectors won't be able to take off between noon and 6pm. This situation will persist until April 2010.

Mumbai airport has two intersecting runways. From October 27, maintenance of secondary runway 14:32 and its intersection with 09:27 is scheduled to begin. While the secondary runway will be closed for three months, the intersection will be closed every Tuesday for six hours from noon to 6pm, an official of Mumbai International Airport Limited (Mial) said.

Most airlines have decided not to schedule flights on sectors like Delhi and London in this period. A total of 174 flights operate in these six hours, 27 to Delhi and five for London.
The shortened length available on main runway 09:27 will be 1,703 metres. The length has been approved by the director-general of civil aviation (DGCA).

AIRLINE NEWS| Air India scouts for chief operating officer

Beleaguered flag carrier Air India has begun a global hunt for a chief operating officer to streamline operations and help it come out of the financial mess that has led to accumulated losses of over $4 billion.

“Preference will be given to those who are in the aviation industry or in the past had turned around the performance of a large organisation with manpower strength of over 1,000,” said the carrier’s advertisement in newspapers like the Financial Times.

The chief operating officer will be based out of the carrier’s headquarters in Mumbai and report directly to the chairman and managing director. Air India did not indicate the pay package it was willing to offer but said it will be based on qualifications and experience.
“Canvassing in any form is prohibited,” said the airline, adding the contract will be for three years to begin with, which may be extended by another two based on performance.

Naukri PayCheck is based on information from over 10 million anonymous profiles across multiple sectors. It takes your Functional Area, Experience, Industry, City, and Education into consideration to provide you with salary information that is highly personalized and relevant.

It is a neat little app.

I checked out some results for common designations and they seem to be ok. I am guessing these are based on the amounts people enter into their naukri.com profiles. Over the years that I have been a recruiter I have seen a fair share of mistakes (per month fed as per year, lakhs are wrong, thousands missing etc) but I would assume the senior profiles have lesser chances of such mistakes.

Try it out.

AIRLINE NEWS| 'Domestic aviation industry heading for stability'

The slowdown-hit domestic aviation industry is witnessing some stability in passenger traffic, though it would take some more time for the overall recovery, aviation experts and organisations feel.

The latest official figures have shown a marginal improvement in air traffic with domestic carriers flying 3.63 million passengers in August compared with 3.59 million in the month before.

In the three weeks of September, there has been a 14-15 per cent rise in passenger traffic compared with that in last September, Executive Director of the Bird Group, Ankur Bhatia said. The company provides a large number of aviation related services to major airlines, MROs and related companies globally.

Noting that improvement in air travel during the festival season was an annual feature, he added the upward trend in passenger traffic was likely to continue beyond this season unless retarded by any economic, political or security crises.

The current upward trend would lead to recovery by the end of the current financial year if no external factor contributed to its stalling, Bhatia said.

He also estimated that though the domestic air traffic had dipped from the 2007 levels last year, it would remain at the 2008 level this calender year too.

To questions on the rising prices of aviation turbine fuel, the Bird Group ED said the prices were likely to stabilise at rates below $100 per barrel, thus keeping airline costs under check. Oil prices have been the single largest component of rising costs and losses for the airlines.

The cash-strapped airlines in India jointly account for about one-third of the global losses, amounting to an estimated $3.6 billion, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

NEWS| Flights from three airports to make Punjab most air connected state

Punjab is all set to emerge as the most air connected state of the country with the commencement of international flights from Mohali Airport and domestic flights from Sahnewal airport from December this year.

Expressing satisfaction over signing of JV (Joint Venture) for Mohali airport, Sukbir Singh Badal Deputy Chief Minister Punjab said this milestone signals the entry of Punjab into a higher orbit of international air connectivity and making Punjab one of the finest and most easily accessible tourist as well as business destinations in South Asia. He said that starting of international flights from Mohali would have economic multiplier effect on whole north India besides propelling the state into the zone of high intensity international trade and commerce. He said that it could be achieved just because of constant perusal of this prestigious project at every level and cooperation extended by Haryana, Chandigarh and Defence establishments besides support by Civil Aviation Ministry and PMO.

Describing airport connectivity as engine of growth, Badal said that starting of international flights from Mohali besides helping the Punjabi Diaspora would also give an impetus to international trade. He said that the economic prosperity and development of any place depended on “ports and airports.” Since Punjab is a land locked state with no access to sea, it desperately needed to open up its skies for increased air connectivity since that was the only way for it to have access to global economies, Mr. Badal added.

Congratulating the people of Ludhiana and its adjoining region on getting the gift of Sahnewal airport approved for domestic flights , Mr. Badal said that after getting permission for its up gradation as domestic airport, night landing facilities have been installed on this airstrip. The airstrip has also been upgraded and necessary infrastructure has been created.

NEWS| Airlines expect 10% passenger growth

Rise in corporate travel and low fares the drivers; 26 per cent growth in August raises hopes.
After being in the doldrums for over a year, the $14-billion Indian aviation industry is showing signs of recovery. Carriers, as well as experts, expect 10 per cent growth in passenger traffic against their earlier prediction of not more than 5 per cent.
Last year, passenger numbers dropped 10.5 per cent. In August, domestic sector traffic rose 26 per cent year-on-year, which is the first time in almost a year that a double digit growth has been recorded.

“After registering a fall of 10.5 per cent in 2008-09, the industry was expected to grow marginally. But considering the growth registered in the last three months, it is poised to grow by 10 per cent this fiscal,” said Mahantesh Sabarad, a senior aviation analyst with Centrum a leading financial company.

However there are others who are more optimistic. “The growth in the aviation industry would be one and a half times the gross domestic product. With good times around, the sector is going to witness 14-15 per cent growth,” said Rajeev Batra, executive director, KPMG.

Airlines say various factors are behind the revival. Corporate travel, which is nearly 30 per cent of the business, is limping back to normalcy. Airlines have been able to keep rates low. The average airline ticket price has come down from Rs 3,956 in 2008 to Rs 3,400 in 2009.

“This rise in the numbers has come because of lower fares and it remains to be seen how much the airlines would be able to take forward the lower fares,” said Ajay Prakash, general secretary, Travel Agents Federation of India.
