My Eclat Coach | Are you a 5-star Leader? Part 9/10

In this series, I will detail my thoughts/suggestions on each of those 10 dimensions
by jessicaflavin
by jessicaflavin

Do you delegate?

most brilliant people can do everything brilliantly if only they had the time.
but you dont.
so, brilliant as you are, you will be left with a lot to do, that you will never be able to do, just coz you dont have another 24 hours, everyday.
delegate.
find out the tasks that you do not enjoy, think someone else could do just as well, or just a little less and start delegating.
that is a start.
but if I could persuade you to, I would suggest you take a different approach.
find out, hunt for people better than you at things you do everyday and then delegate.
it is so much better!

NEWS| Air France takes delivery of its first Airbus A380 superjumbo plane

Air France took delivery of its first Airbus A380 superjumbo Friday, and will become the first European carrier to fly the double-decker when it uses it on its Paris-New York route from Nov. 20.

The first of the 12 A380s Air France ordered was handed over at a ceremony at Airbus' plant in Hamburg, Germany.

"Each A380 will enable Air France to save euro12 million to euro15 million ($18 to $22 million) a year, which ... provides the company with the means to withstand the crisis," said Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, Air France KLM chief executive, at the ceremony.

"Air France will therefore be able to offer customers even greater comfort, while keeping costs under control."

The aircraft will be configured with 449 economy seats, 80 business class seats and nine first class seats.

Korea to order 290 aircraft by 2028: Airbus

Korea is to order about 290 new airliners with more than 100 seats in the next 20 years, an executive of Airbus said yesterday in Seoul.

Airbus, the world's largest commercial plane maker, is predicting a strong demand for new passenger aircraft in Korea by 2028, with air carriers expected to take some 290 planes, Richard Carcaillet, product marketing director for A380, said in a press conference.

Very large aircraft, such as the A380 superjumbo, will be preferred in the Korean market thanks to its cost-effectiveness and fuel-efficiency, he said.

In the environmental aspect, the A380 is eco-friendly as "it consumes less than three liters per 100 kilometers per passenger."

The strong demand on new aircraft is predicted with the rapidly growing passenger traffic of around 4.8 percent per year, the France-based manufacturer said.

Air Canada flight from Vancouver redirected due to beer issue

An Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Fort McMurray was forced to land in Kelowna after an incident involving a passenger, some beer and the toilet.

One of the passengers stole beer from the trolley and then attempted to flush away the evidence.

Upon landing, the man in question was arrested and two fellow passengers were also questioned. The group of them had been drinking prior to take-off and it seems they were keen to continue, although less keen on paying for the privilege.

The man has been charged with ‘causing a disturbance on an aircraft’.

AirAsia announces 3 new India routes from KL

AirAsia has announced that it will commence its daily direct flights to Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in November 2009 respectively.

Following a successful launch from the South Indian city of Trichy last year, AirAsia now offers the people of Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram the pleasure of flying to Kuala Lumpur for an unbeatable all-inclusive fare from as low as INR 1499 (RM 129) all in fares one way respectively for the booking period from 15th to 20th October, 2009 for the travel period from 12th November 2009 to 31st July 2010 for Kochi, from 16th November 2009 to 31st July 2010 for Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and from 19th November 2009 to 31st July 2010 for Kolkata. Promotional seats are limited and available on first-come, first-served basis and made exclusively available online via www.airasia.com and mobile.airasia.com.
AirAsia launched its first route to Trichy, India which is situated in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu on December 1, 2008, and is the first airline in South East Asia to fly direct to the city. The launch of the first frequency to the city recorded an overwhelming response with an average load factor of 85% which led the airline to increase its 2nd frequency to the city with AirAsia’s 2nd direct daily flight on 1st September, 2009. To date, AirAsia has carried over 100,000 guests to and from Trichy.
AirAsia Regional Head of Commercial, Kathleen Tan said, “Today, AirAsia is reiterating its commitment to the Indian market with the launch of three new routes- Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the first airline to launch 3 cities in India in one day. While most airlines are cutting back during these tough economic times, AirAsia is aggressively expanding its India route network as we believe there is robust demand in low fare travel. The three new India destinations are colourful cities with rich historical and cultural traditions. We believe our low fares and outstanding innovative services, will definitely open up new markets, stimulate new travel demand and enable more people to fly with us; thus promoting tourism which is beneficial for the economies of both countries.”

“It has been an ongoing and sustained effort for AirAsia to provide the best service with unbelievable low fares to our guests. With the introduction of the three new routes, connectivity to the three cities to and from Kuala Lumpur direct will bridge social ties and promote new connectivity via our hub in Kuala Lumpur as a gateway to over 130 routes in Asia, including the ones served by Airasia X, its long haul affiliate to Australia (Gold Coast, Perth, Melbourne), China (Hangzhou, Tianjin, Chengdu), Taipei, London and Abu Dhabi, bringing the well known brand on to a global stage” concluded Kathleen.
It is now more convenient than ever to fly to Kuala Lumpur from Kolkata, located in the East Indian State of West Bengal and Kochi & Thiruvananthapuram, both located in the South Indian State of Kerala. Moreover as compared to other budget carriers, the route network offered by this award-winning airline is the most extensive in the region. This will translate into a low-cost yet efficient travel experience for guests who would benefit from using the LCC Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to connect to other regional ASEAN cities or long haul sectors serviced by AirAsia X. To add value, under GoHoliday at goholiday.airasia.com, guests may choose their holiday lodgings from over 50,000 hotels across Asia, Europe, India, Australia, Sri Lanka and China including ground transfer options and fantastic tour packages.
Kuala Lumpur is an exciting and bustling metropolitan city and the center and symbol of Malaysia's rapid rise as an economic powerhouse. This includes amongst others the modern buildings of the Golden Triangle, massive shopping malls, rocket-like Petronas towers which rise above the city and driverless trains that glide across the city. Yet nestled amidst the high-rises, it still offers a glimpse of its colorful heritage and a taste of traditional, exotic Asia. With a blend of unique cultures, great variety of food and world-renowned attractions such as KLCC Twin Towers, Genting City of Entertainment often frequented by families, Sunway Lagoon water park, the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls located in the Langkawi islands, Taman Negara National Park, a major wildlife reserve, both Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur are renowned as perfect year-round holiday and business destinations. Guests are also spoilt for choice as there’s more than just Malaysia under the AirAsia network, with flights to exotic destinations across the ASEAN countries and beyond via our hubs in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu), Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket), and Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Bali).

SpiceJet plans to fly overseas

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet Airlines, promoted by a group of investors led by the Kansagra family and Delhi-based Ajay Singh, is working on a plan to start international operations next year, making it the third private Indian carrier after Jet Airways and Kingfisher to fly overseas.

The airline qualifies for international operations from June next year after it completes five years of domestic operations, the minimum stipulated by the government.
The airline plans to fly mainly to Saarc countries, south-east Asia and select west Asian routes rather than long-haul routes, such as London and New York as Jet and Kingfisher have done. “We are planning our international launch carefully and will fly only on routes that we think are under-served or have potential for more flights,” said Sanjay Agarwal, chief executive officer, SpiceJet, in an interview to Business Standard.
Agarwal explained that the airline would start operations in sectors in which SpiceJet’s Boeing 737 fleet can fly.
On competition from low-cost carriers in west Asia like Fly Dubai and Air Arabia Aggarwal conceded that while the competition is tough, their strategy would be to service markets that are still under-served from India. These routes could include Riyadh and Dammam in Saudi Arabia . Aggarwal also pointed out that routes like Mumbai-Kathmandu, Chennai-Singapore are still viable and provide potential for growth.

Air India flight hit by eagle

An Air India flight from Dubai carrying 31 passengers and the crew today had a providential escape when an eagle hit the plane when it was landing at the Nedumbassery airport here, airport sources said.

The flight C-537, which was headed to Kozhikode, was diverted to the airport here due to bad weather in Kozhikode and was about to land here when it was hit by the bird which got entangled in the propeller. However, the flight landed safely, the sources said.

Later the flight resumed its journey to Kozhikode after repair work, the sources said.

SpiceJet plans to raise Rs 200 cr

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet, which attracted a Rs 380-crore investment from US billionaire Wilbur Ross last year, is now planning to raise close to Rs 200 crore before the end of the current financial year, said a person close to the development.

The instrument to raise this money is not yet decided, but options like foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) and banks loans are being considered. “The airline’s officials will discuss this at the next board meeting,” he said.
When contacted, SpiceJet’s chief executive officer Sanjay Aggarwal told ET: “Any cash the company might raise will be used to build reserves or to grow the airline.” He declined to elaborate on the issue. SpiceJet is promoted by a group of investors led by the Kansagra family and Delhi-based Ajay Singh.
SpiceJet is one of the two airlines that is making profits in a segment which is estimated to post a cumulative
annual loss of Rs 18,000 crore in the current fiscal.

Fares dip as airlines look to low-cost model

Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways have converted around half their capacity into low-cost services. This has contributed to bringing down the average fares of airlines as a whole by about 30 per cent, from about Rs 4,000 in September last year to Rs 2,700 currently, a key reason why the domestic passenger market is looking up after months of decline.

“The number of low-cost seats in the system has increased by over 50 per cent this year compared with the same period last year,” said Mohit Shrivastava, head of online sales at Makemytrip.com.
Among the full service carriers, the government carrier, Air India, plans to launch a low-cost model in the domestic skies. It already has a low-cost airline called Air India Express which operates on international routes.
KIngfisher Airlines has converted some full services into LCCs, shifting these to Kingfisher Red (earlier called
Air Deccan, the country’s first LCC) from Kingfisher Airlines (the full service operations).
Jet Airways, the oldest private airline in India, has also increased the number of low-cost seats in the system by around 50 per cent. This does not include the seats offered by JetLite, which could take the number of total low-cost seats being offered to around 65 per cent.
“..We launched JetKonnect in June this year and that contributed to most of it,” said a source in the airline.
Indigo has increased the total number of seats by around 40 per cent in the past year.
SpiceJet has also increased the number of seats, by 53 per cent, not by increasing the number of aircraft but by raising the number of flights.

DO you have formal/informal listening sessions?

The formal ones
- structure time
- space
- make sure there are no interruptions
- make sure there has been enough time to prepare for both parties
- ensure the time between two sessions is mapped
- ensure everyone is covered
- take notes
- give feedback
- if you can, do something. if you can't, let them know.
The informal ones
the informal listening sessions are probably the ones where you will pick up more non-verbal cues than the formal ones.
in the hall, at lunch, at a staff party, the gym.  it could be anywhere.
Just two inputs here:
1. be willing to listen
2. be willing to stop when it turns gossipy!

Air traffic rises 30.8% in Sept

Domestic passenger traffic continued its upward flight in September as scheduled airlines carried 8.37 lakh, or 30.8%, more fliers compared with the same month last year.

This is the fourth consecutive month when air traffic was higher than last year, indicating recovery of demand in the airline market.
Figures released by the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) on Thursday indicated passengers were returning to air travel. Total number of passengers flown by local carriers in September jumped to 35.56 lakh against 27.19 lakh in the same period last year.
The year-on-year (yoy) growth in passenger numbers for the first nine months of this year also increased 97 basis points (bps) to 319.79 lakh from 316.71 lakh last year.
Ankur Bhatia, managing director of Amadeus, said while low fares did give flight to passenger traffic in September, it was economic recovery and flush of liquidity that gave passenger numbers a bigger boost.
"It's not just fares, the overall improvement in economic and liquidity conditions in the market was spurring growth in domestic air travel. I expect traffic in this month (October), when the fares have firmed up considerably, to be higher," he said.
Since September is the leanest month of the year, there was a marginal drop of 3% in the number of fliers. Passenger traffic fell to 35.1 lakh from 36.3 lakh in August.

Bookings cheer aviation industry

Diwali seems to have brought the much-needed cheer to the aviation industry, which was worrying about dwindling passenger loads. Travel industry experts say bookings for the festive season have shown an upswing compared to last year. With Christmas and winter holidays lined ahead, industry observers hope the aviation sector is on the road to recovery.

"Bookings this Diwali have been much better than expected. We were expecting a lukewarm festive season, but bookings have been 10-15% higher than last October,'' said Ajay Prakash, general secretary, Travel Agents Federation of India. "Queries for December have already started pouring in, indicating that the sentiment among flyers may not dwindle,'' he added.
Industry analysts said long weekends one after the other in the past two months also helped boost sentiments, with people planning quick getaways. "The weekend preceding Independence day was a long one. Then came the Dussera holidays. These set the tone for Diwali,'' said a Fort-based travel agent. In fact, August-September are usually considered dead months travel-wise, but this year they saw considerable bookings thanks to early festivals and many holidays. "What's more, passenger traffic picked up despite the swine flu scare andattacks on Indians in Australia,'' he added.
The cheap fares advertised by most airlines two months prior to the festive season contributed most to the upswing, experts say.

‘India can be a hub for air traffic in future’

As the aviation industry today is facing enormous challenges because of rising fuel costs and the necessity of using energy sustainably, international aviation experts believe that India has the potential of becoming an air traffic hub in future.

During the ongoing ‘Asia-Pacific Weeks (APW) 2009’ in Berlin – the German capital, some renowned aviation experts said that India may be a key strategic hub for air traffic in future.
Werner Heesen, the former Director South Asia for German airlines Lufthansa said that despite infrastructural problems at Indian airports the future of Indian aviation industry seems bright. “Yes, there is a problem of infrastructure but Hyderabad and Bangalore airports have already been commissioned and a new run-way prepared in New Delhi.”
Lufthansa flights go to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and now to Pune as well.
Heesen, who remained in India from 2003 to 2008, said he witnessed many positive changes in Indian aviation industry during his five year stint there. “India started opening doors to liberalization and country’s economy has contributed a great deal in the development of this industry.”
