Emirates to operate A380 service between Paris and Dubai effective December 29, 2009

According to a report in etravelblackboard.com, Emirates has confirmed that it will operate an A380 service between Paris and Dubai from December 29, 2009 one month earlier than initially planned.

The 489-seat aircraft will be incorporated into Emirates' already well established double daily flights to Paris. The A380 aircraft will initially service three of the morning departures from Dubai, becoming daily from January 17, 2010.

Salem Obaidalla, Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe and Russian Federation, Emirates' said, “Our forward carryings out of France are strong. Jet Airways' registers 33% increase in its domestic passenger traffic and 19% growth in international traffic

Jet Airways today reported a 33 % increase in its domestic passenger traffic for the month of November 2009, as compared to the same period last year. The airlines’ international passenger traffic has also registered a growth of 19% on a seat factor of 81.9% in November 2009.

JetLite the wholly owned subsidiary of Jet Airways India Ltd has also done remarkably well in increasing its passenger traffic by 22% and a seat factor of 76.7% in the month of November 2009.

Mr. Nikos Kardassis, Chief Executive Officer, Jet Airways (I) Ltd said, “Our improved performance in November 2009 is largely due to the contributions of our team of highly dedicated professionals and the coming together of a series of strategic restructuring initiatives being implemented by the airline over the last year. The restructuring involved a series of route rationalizations, trimming of strategic costs, streamlining of processes, addition of new routes and an enhanced customer experience. Additionally, a number of marketing and network initiatives have resulted increased payloads and led to a robust growth in traffic despite the all-round fall in global air travel.”

Kardassis added, “Jet Airways Konnect launched this year was our flexible, pragmatic response to the downshift in demand across several domestic routes, which saw a shift in demand from full-service to low-cost due to the global slowdown. With business loads down, Jet Airways Konnect enables Jet Airways to offer passengers a quality, low-fare product, with the option of re-introducing business class seats when demand for the same picks up. Jet Airways continues to be the preferred choice of travel for international and domestic routes recording a higher load factor and enhanced yields helped by innovative pricing to match capacity with demand.”
As part of the company’s strategic expansion program, the airline has also introduced new routes for its guests connecting Delhi – Chennai / Patna / Raipur and additional services on the Mumbai – Coimbatore in the domestic sector. On the international sector, Jet Airways has enhanced its connectivity with the introduction of a new Mumbai – Kathmandu service with its new – generation Boeing 737 aircraft and increased frequency on the Delhi – Kathmandu sector. The airline will also introduce a new Mumbai – Dhaka service on December 23rd 2009. Both these services will offer travelers seamless connectivity to several destinations across India, as well as to the Gulf, North America, Europe and ASEAN.

In a bid to create a larger customer base and offer enhanced services to its international and domestic travelers, Jet Airways plans to develop Delhi and Mumbai as major hubs to international destinations.

Jet Airways has entered into codeshare agreements with top airlines like American Airlines, Air Canada, All Nippon Airways, Brussels Airlines, Etihad Airways, Emirates, JetLite, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, Virgin Atlantic, thus increasing capacity and providing enhanced connectivity for their guests.

Airlines passenger traffic picks up

Mumbai, New Delhi: On the back drop of competitive fares offerings, airlines have recorded improvement in load factors due to pick up in consumer demand. Private carrier Jet Airways has reported a 33% increase in its domestic passenger traffic and 19% surge in its international traffic in November 2009 as compared to the same period last year.

According to the statistics released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), national carrier Air India had a seat factor of 72.8% for October as compared to 67.5% in September, Paramount Airways seats factor has also jumped from 84.2% in September to 86.2% in October. Low cost airline Go Air has also recorded a seat factor of 79.9% as against 77.2% according to the statistics released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The November figures are yet to be released.

Meanwhile, due to improvement in load factors, Jet Airways, which had launched its low-cost carrier Jet Konnect in May this year and operates 195 daily flights (around two-third of its total flights) under that brand, now plans to convert some flights back to its full-service brand Jet Airways.

Nikos Kardassis, CEO, Jet Airways told FE that the restructuring involved a series of route rationalisations, trimming of strategic costs, streamlining of processes, addition of new routes and an enhanced customer experience.

IndiGo reins in loss in Q2 on passengers, cost cuts

The disciplined low-fare model adopted by the InterGlobe Aviation Pvt. Ltd-run IndiGo seems to be working: for the quarter ended September, the carrier posted a net loss of Rs6 crore, less than one-tenth the loss posted by its nearest rival in the same period.

SpiceJet Ltd, India’s second biggest low-fare carrier, logged a loss of Rs101 crore in the September quarter. The financials of the third low-fare carrier GoAir, run by Go Airlines (India) Pvt. Ltd, are not available.

A senior IndiGo executive attributed its performance to its “brand new planes” that had helped the airline cut maintenance and fuel costs. Besides, the “lease cost for IndiGo was also very less”. He declined to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

The combined losses at Indian airlines grew 44.4% to Rs8,557.37 crore in the fiscal year ended March, making it the worst year for an industry beset by high costs, excess capacity and a slump in passenger traffic. They are expected to post similar losses this fiscal, according to various market estimates.

According to data furnished by the ministry of civil aviation on 19 November, IndiGo is one of two airlines that made a profit in 2008-09. IndiGo posted a Rs82.16 crore profit for the year, while full-service carrier Paramount Airways Ltd posted a Rs7.26 crore profit. The full-year loss for SpiceJet was Rs352.50 crore. GoAir’s net loss was Rs22.55 crore.

The Immigration Blog | Immigration rules result in flood of bogus students

Air India pilot held in Dubai

A 63-year-old pilot from KwaZulu-Natal was detained by authorities in Dubai who said he owed money to HSBC bank.

Air India pilot Gavin Bosse, who lives with his wife, Natalie, in Mooi River, was leaving Dubai for India on Saturday afternoon when he was arrested by immigration officials.

Initially unsure of what money he owed HSBC, Bosse said it eventually emerged that he had stood surety for his son's vehicle purchase agreement about five years ago. His son had left the country soon after the vehicle had been written off in an accident.

Attempts by his wife to ascertain who she needed to speak to at HSBC to resolve the issue had been stymied, she said, as calls to the bank's numbers were greeted only by recorded messages asking for account numbers. She said she was unable to find direct numbers for HSBC branches or officials.

Bosse, who is diabetic and suffers from high blood pressure, had been without his prescribed medication until yesterday afternoon, when he was eventually admitted to hospital.

He said an official from the South African embassy in Dubai, who had been helping him, had taken him as far as a taxi rank after his release from prison.

Attempts to get comment from HSBC in Dubai were unsuccessful as there were no direct contact numbers for branches or officials.

Air India officials referred The Mercury to the South African embassy for comment.

Grounded hostesses fail in court, but pass fitness test to get flying

More than a dozen `overweight' airhostesses litigated for three years against their grounding by Indian Airlines. On judgment day, the Supreme Court delightfully chucked the bulky petitions out on learning that the airhostesses had shed the flab and started flying again.

IA, fighting hard to shed the flab, had for the first time in 1987 stipulated that crew members would be taken off flying duties and treated to be on leave or leave without pay if his/her weight exceeded 10% of the outer limit till he/she got back to shape.

Over the years, the overweight grace had been gradually reduced from 10% of the stipulated weight to 3 kg and finally on May 4, 2006, the airlines even withdrew the 3 kg grace limit, which threatened many airhostesses with the prospect of grounding and leave without pay.

As many as 13 airhostesses challenged this new rule as arbitrary before the Bombay High Court . Withdrawal of concession was no ground for the airhostesses to challenge it, the HC had said while dismissing their pleas. Their appeals before the division Bench of the HC met the same fate.

"The pilot was not ready to land but Rahul Gandhi forced him to land"

The two pilots, who landed the helicopter carrying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi allegedly in poor visibility in UP's Sitapur district on Monday, have been derostered pending investigations.

DGCA has asked the pilots to not fly till further orders and summoned them to Delhi to ‘explain’ the incident.
However, the District Magistrate of Sitapur, in his report to the UP government, has already confirmed that the helicopter had indeed landed in complete darkness.
Importantly, the DM’s statement is in sync with Rita Joshi’s assertion, yesterday, that the chopper had landed in pitch dark surroundings, putting everyone’s life in danger.
"We had to leave in 15 minutes because it was so dark. Putting our life in danger, we landed the helicopter in zero visibility in Sitapur. The pilot was not ready to land but Rahul Gandhi forced him to land. You should see his commitment", Joshi had told reporters.
But Rahul’s explanation was different: “I am a pilot and I am absolutely aware of the dangers of flying in low visibility conditions. I will be the last person to do it.”
However, the continuing with war-of-words between the Mayawati government and the Centre over Rahul’s unannounced visits to the state, the state government has shot off a letter to the Centre over alleged violation of security norms during Gandhi's visit to the state.
