Asiana Airlines joins the Etihad Guest programme
Etihad Guest, the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, has announced a new partnership with Korea's leading airline, Asiana Airlines.
The loyalty tie-up follows the codeshare agreement reached between the two airlines in October this year, and follows Etihad’s own entry into the South Korea market with flights to Seoul which commenced earlier this month.
The new partnership allows Etihad Guest members to earn and redeem Etihad Guest Miles each time they fly with Asiana Airlines. Members of Asiana’s loyalty programme, Asiana Club Programme, will also be able to earn and redeem miles when traveling on Etihad Airways.
Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer, said: “This new partnership opens up more opportunities for Etihad Guest members to earn and redeem miles, with a new range of destinations to choose from.
“The codeshare with Asiana, Korea’s leading airline, is a very important relationship for Etihad, and we look forward to strengthening our relationship through what is a very attractive proposition for customers of both airlines.”
With its modern fleet of 75 aircraft, Asiana serves 85 cities in 21 countries and 12 destinations within Korea. The airline also operates the largest network between mainland China and the rest of the world.

China Eastern to buy 50 Airbus airliners
China Eastern Airlines said Thursday it had agreed with Europe-based Airbus to buy 50 A320 airliners with a list price of 3.22 billion dollars, in the latest sign of the country's aviation boom.
China Eastern said in an announcement to the Hong Kong stock exchange the aircraft would be delivered in stages from 2012 to 2015 and would expand its capacity by 11.24 percent including the fleet of its Shanghai Airlines subsidiary.
The airline did not disclose the price of its acquisition but said the Airbus consortium had granted it "significant price concessions... which will mainly affect the depreciation of the aircraft in the operation cost of the company."
The announcement marks the latest in a line of large deals by some of the bigger players in China's burgeoning aviation market.
Last week Shandong Airlines said it planned to buy 15 Boeing passenger planes worth up to 1.2 billion dollars, to be delivered between 2014 and 2015.
In November, Air China said it had agreed to buy 20 passenger planes from Airbus in deal worth 4.49 billion dollars. Half the planes would be A330s and the other half were to be A350 series aircraft, the company said.
Also in November, China Southern Airlines said it had agreed to buy 36 planes from Airbus for 3.78 billion US dollars.
In September, Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific said it had confirmed an order for 30 long-range A350 Airbus aircraft with a book price of 7.82 billion dollars -- the biggest single order in the carrier's history.
China's rapidly expanding economy has seen the country's aviation sector grow at a blistering pace over the last few years, with few analysts seeing any likelihood of a slowdown.
Leading aircraft manufacturers are vying for market share as the Chinese demand for civil airplanes booms.
Boeing said in November that it expected China's civil aircraft fleet to more than triple over the next 20 years, with 5,180 planes by 2029 compared with 1,570 last year.

Eleven hours on a grounded plane: Cathay apologises to passengers
Cathay Pacific apologised yesterday to more than 1000 passengers who sat through 16-hour flights only to wait for up to another 11 hours in snowbound planes at New York's main airport.
Marooned travellers criticised the airline's response to a storm that drove snow and gale force winds across the region from Sunday, closing airports including John F Kennedy International Airport where the passengers were stuck.
One said the "entire event (had) been mismanaged".

Cathay said 1100 passengers "suffered" being trapped in its planes for between four and 11 hours as they sat grounded on the snow-covered tarmac "because gates were not available at the airport for passengers to disembark".
Angry passengers criticised the airline for a lack of communication during the incident, and even for letting planes leave Hong Kong given the blizzard conditions in New York.
"I think they knew when we took off in Hong Kong that the conditions were not good, but they decided to let the plane go," pastry chef Dominique Ansel told The Wall Street Journal.
"People are super angry but everybody's too exhausted," Ansel said, adding that "I hope Cathay will make up for this."
Passenger Mark Asten told the paper: "I think the entire event has been mismanaged... When bad things happen, you can go a long way with giving customers meaningful explanations, and they haven't met that challenge."
Cathay pledged a review to ensure passengers were not marooned in planes again. JFK and La Guardia Airport in New York City, as well as Newark International in New Jersey, were closed by the storm but reopened Monday.
The airline said service was returning to normal, with two of three Hong Kong-bound flights on their way to the Asian financial hub.
Anger is mounting among passengers stranded on airport tarmacs and in terminals as flight delays threatened to stretch into the weekend following the worst December snowstorm to hit New York City in six decades.
