NEWS | 3 years after PM’s announcement, construction still to begin at Mohali airport

The Airport Authority of India has announced that an international airport will soon be constructed in Mohali. The Prime Minister is expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony.
The Prime Minister had on January 5, 2008, announced that an international airport would be constructed in Mohali within two years. However, apart from the boundary wall, there is no other construction. The ground is used by locals to rear cattles. Even a road connecting the proposed airport to the main road has not been constructed.
The construction of the airport has been delayed due to various reasons. First the administration took a long time to acquire land. Then it mulled over the format of joint-venture to be adopted. And finally there was a controversy regarding the name of the airport between Punjab and Haryana governments.
