IATA calls for global solution to reduce CO2 emissions

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reiterated the air transport industry’s commitment to its ambitious agenda to reduce CO2 emissions and urged the European Union (EU) to abandon its misguided plans to include aviation in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) commencing in 2012.

IATA invited governments to join industry as committed partners in a global approach to reducing aviation’s carbon emissions that could also include a global ETS or other compensation measures.

“The industry’s value chain is united around ambitious targets and a clear strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. To achieve the positive economic measures, technology improvements, more efficient infrastructure and better operations necessary to meet our targets, governments need to be much more proactive stakeholders and real partners,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO in a speech at the Greener Skies conference in Hong Kong.

Airlines, airports, air navigation service providers and manufacturers are committed to improving fuel efficiency by 1.5% annually to 2020, capping net carbon emissions from 2020 with carbon-neutral growth and cutting net emissions in half by 2050, compared to 2005.

“These are challenging targets. Airlines represent 2% of global manmade CO2 emissions. This year that is estimated to be some 650 million tonnes of CO2 emitted while carrying 2.8 billion passengers and 46 million tonnes of cargo. By 2050, the industry aspires to carry 16 billion passengers and 400 million tones of cargo with some 320 million tonnes of CO2 emissions,” said Tyler.

The industry has agreed on a four-pillar strategy to achieve emissions reductions that has also been endorsed by governments through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The four pillars are investments in technology, more efficient infrastructure, more efficient operations and positive economic measures.

“IATA is not opposed to emissions trading. We support the concept as a possible mechanism for the fourth pillar of our environment strategy. But the EU’s unilateral and regional approach to ETS could not be more misguided. It is distracting governments from focusing on the real solution—a global approach through ICAO,” said Tyler.

Tyler noted that the EU’s plans challenge national sovereignty. “Europe’s plans contravene international law with the extra-territorial application of taxes. What right does Europe have to charge an Australian carrier for emissions over China? It is an attack on sovereignty that is being challenged by governments. China, India and the US are among states formally opposing the EU ETS. And the US is even processing a bill that will prohibit its carriers from participating. While the EU sees its actions as supporting a positive environmental agenda, the rest of the world sees it as an attack on sovereignty,” said Tyler.

Managing carbon emissions is a global problem. Aviation is a global industry. And we need a global solution. All roads lead to ICAO. It is time for Europe to refocus on a Plan B that is centered on a global solution through ICAO,” said Tyler.

Boeing delivers first 787 Dreamliner to All Nippon Airways

Boeing has delivered its first 787 Dreamliner today to Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) following a three year delay.

Boeing suffered a number of setbacks during its test flights which added to the delays.

Made from composite materials, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes and will allow airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public.

In addition to providing airlines with unprecedented fuel economy and low operating costs, the 787 features a host of new technologies that greatly enhance the passenger experience.

The plane was presented to launch customer ANA at a ceremony in Washington adjacent to the factory where the airplane was assembled.

More than 500 employees representing the 787 program walked alongside the all-new jetliner to present it to ANA executives as a crowd of thousands looked on.

“Today we celebrate a significant moment in the history of flight,” said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and CEO.

Etihad Airways celebrates five years of services to Paris

Etihad Airways is celebrating five years of its non-stop services between Paris and Abu Dhabi.

The airline commenced operations to the French capital in May 2006, and since then has carried more than 770,000 travellers and nearly 51,500 tons of cargo on the route.

Pictured: James Hogan, Etihad Airways chief executive at Etihad’s reception in Paris marking five years of operation

The Abu Dhabi-Paris route has enjoyed average passenger loads of 75 per cent over its first five years and has grown to 77 per cent so far in 2011.

The amount of cargo carried has tripled since the start of operations to France, from 5,000 tons to 15,000 tons annually.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways chief executive, said: “Our Paris operation has exceeded our expectations over the past five years, and we are pleased to be able to build on this success with the additional frequency we put in place in July this year, going double-daily.

“This year we will carry 200,000 travellers on the Abu Dhabi-Paris route, up 16 per cent from 173,000 in 2010.

“By April 2012, we expect to have carried one million travellers overall on the route since its inception.

Fasten your seat belts, says Brussels

Undeterred by the rising chorus of protest over inclusion of the international aviation sector in the European Union’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) from January 1 next year, the European Commission today announced it was going to weather the turbulence and go ahead with its proposed legislation.
Speaking to reporters here, Jos Delbeke, director-general of the EC’s Climate Action directorate, announced the benchmark values to be used to allocate free greenhouse gas emission allowances to airlines. Individual airlines can, thus, now assess the proposed legislation’s financial implications.
Bringing aviation into the ETS’ ambit will require all airlines flying within and into Europe to cap their emissions at a particular level and purchase additional carbon allowances if they exceed those limits.
In 2012, about 85 per cent of aviation allowances are to be allocated for free to aircraft operators, 30 per cent of which would go to non-EU carriers. In the period 2013-2020, the percentage of free allocations will be reduced to 82 per cent. The remaining percentage of allocations will be auctioned every year, beginning in 2012.
In a nod to the objections of new entrants and fast growing airlines from emerging economies, three per cent of allowances are to be set aside as a reserve for them. The EC said this three per cent translated to roughly 50 million allowances, worth € 600 million at current market values.
Ever since the EU made it clear that it was going ahead with its aviation ETS legislation, international carriers have been contesting the move, calling it unilateral and even “imperialist”. The Americans and Chinese, among others, have lodged official protests, raising questions over the legitimacy of the EU imposing charges on flights that start in San Francisco or Shanghai.
The airlines say that including aviation in the ETS will raise the costs of flights significantly. According to a study by Standard & Poor’s, inclusion in the ETS could cost the industry €1.1 billion ($1.6 bn) in the first year and (depending on the distance flown and the carbon price) put up to €40 on the price of a ticket.
Airlines in Asia, which run long-haul flights to Europe and beyond, will be particularly hard hit.
Manish Goswami, who heads the environmental division for India’s Jet Airways, makes the point that the proper forum to address climate change issues is the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. “The unilateral attempt of the EU to introduce market-based measures will put an undue burden on emerging economies s like India,” he said.
He charges that since developed countries have the historical responsibility for climate change, including aviation, the EU ETS ignores the Common but Differentiated Responsibilities principle enshrined in the Kyoto protocol.
Unlike the US and China, the Indian government has thus far been muted in its response to the EU move, despite three major Indian carriers (Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher) flying in and out of Europe. However, in an unusually combative move, the ministry for external affairs will be hosting a meeting in New Delhi on Thursday and Friday, to be attended by representatives of 12 countries, including the US, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil and China, to protest the inclusion of aviation in the ETS.

GE to invest $200 mn to build pune unit

US conglomerate General Electric (GE) will invest $200 million (Rs 980 crore) to build an integrated multi-product manufacturing facility in Pune.
“Our new integrated manufacturing facility is coming up near Pune on a 68-acre plot for making a wide portfolio of products for the Indian market,” GE chairman, Jeffrey R Immelt, said here on Monday.
The facility will create 2,000 jobs and help to drive localisation of GE’s products. It will initially have 450,000 sq ft of space, which can go up to 1 million sq ft.
Immelt said GE saw robust demand for its products worldwide and he did not expect any big impact of the double-dip recession on the firm’s business.
“At a time of global volatility, we still see robust demand for our infrastructure products and still feel quite good about the prospects on a global basis for the industry we are in, like infrastructure and financial services. The growth of infrastructure sector would continue to be robust. Aviation, energy and transportation are quite healthy in the US market,” he said.

Ministry grounds private carriers’ foreign dreams

While the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has raised concern over the extant government policy helping foreign airlines capture higher market share on lucrative sectors to and from India, the civil aviation ministry seems to be content with the status quo.
The ministry has been holding local private carriers Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Kingfisher Airlines from operating around 50,000 seats on international routes. The ministry's policy, at the behest of state-owned Air India, has resulted in lower utilisation of traffic entitlements by the local carriers on routes like India-Dubai. On the India-Gulf sectors alone, the private carriers’ plan to operate over 21,000 seats a week is awaiting the ministry’s approval since early this year.
Bigger foreign carriers like Emirates have made most of the delay in regulatory clearance to their Indian counterparts. On India-Dubai sector, designated carriers of Dubai are utilising 98% of the available traffic rights as against 46% by Indian carriers.
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation India head Kapil Kaul said the government’s policy to delay the private carriers’ plan to operate additional services on foreign routes could force the airlines to deploy capacity on domestic routes.

Post IB alert, charter flights come under the scanner

aking a chartered flight will no longer be a cakewalk. Intense security screening on private chartered aircraft and their pilots has been initiated with Intelligence Bureau issuing a red alert that a charter plane from Hubli airport would be used to carry out 9/11-like airborne attack on Mumbai.
Hubli-based VRL Logistics Limited which operates air charter flights catering to VIP's and corporate sector said special security arrangements have been put in place following the alert to ensure that their Hawker Beechcraft Premier Jet 1A aircraft is safe and secure.
"Though our aircraft is currently being serviced we have made special arrangements to ensure that it is not left unattended," Capt Satish Chandra Mehta, chief pilot, VRL told DNA. He said intelligence sleuths on Sunday made enquiries on the crew, the aircraft and their flight schedules.
Capt Arvind Sharma, CEO, Agni Aviation that operates from Jakkur Airfield, said screening of both the aircrew and passengers travelling on private charter flights is being done.

AAI asks for exemption from Cabinet on lease permission

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has asked for selective exemption from the order to seek permission from the Union cabinet before the sale or long-term lease of any land of the government or a government-controlled statutory body.
The state-owned airport operator is estimated to have a land bank of 45,000 acres across all airports. The Cabinet Secretariat has asked all ministries to put up proposals for sale or long-term lease of land belonging to the central government or its agencies before the Union Cabinet, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs or the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure for approval.
This was done after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the cabinet secretariat to frame a comprehensive policy to stop quiet transfers of government land to private parties. “We have asked for an exemption to lease out land for a period of up to 30 years without taking permission from the government,” said a senior AAI official, who did not want to be identified.
The official said AAI had a lot of land across all airports in the country and they get into various short-term leases. Taking permission for all would be time-consuming. “Our act allows us to lease out land. If we have to go to the Cabinet for the clearance for all such agreements, the whole procedure will be delayed. Getting Cabinet approval takes its own time,” the official added.

DGCA gets tough with airlines over air safety norms

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has read out the riot act to airlines to comply fully with all safety-related issues and asked them to cover the deficiencies in a time-bound manner.
Airlines have been directed to complete all pending probes into incidents that have been delayed for very long periods of times due to non-receipt of reports on spare parts from aircraft manufacturers. They have also been asked to have proper safety departments and get the regulatory nod for such sections and their heads from the DGCA at the earliest. When contacted, DGCA chief Bharat Bhushan said: "Our stand is of zero tolerance as far as air safety goes. All the laid down procedures and requirements have to be met and their compliance is being checked on a regular basis. Failure to do so would invite strict action. Everyone - airlines and airport operators - have to work together to ensure full safety for air travel."
The DGCA has come down heavily on airlines for either not having proper flight safety manuals or approved chiefs of safety. "Both AI and AI Express do not have an approved safety manual or chief and deputy chief of safety sections.." said sources.

Chennai airport operations pose major threat to passengers

Describing the near-miss on Saturday as a "serious incident", senior aviation and navigation experts said Chennai airport operations were posing a major threat to passenger safety as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) does not consult the air traffic control (ATC) or the pilots while making any changes to flight navigation. They also point out that AAI has ignored the need for rapid exit taxiways in the multi-crore airport expansion project in Chennai.
V Krishnan, senior advisor of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, said Saturday's incident, which occurred due to the closure of the taxiway, was neither the mistake of the landed aircraft nor the ATC officials. "Rejecting the take-off of Jet Airways and decision to 'go around' by the Air India pilot were timely decisions coordinated by the ATC. Neither the ATC nor the aircraft could be blamed. Rather, they averted a major accident," said Krishnan, a member of the Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Council that was constituted after the Mangalore plane crash. Krishnan said Chennai needed a rapid exit taxiway to reduce the runway occupancy time. "Even the new taxiway being built in the airport does not have the provisions of a rapid exit for the aircraft. We should not fail to take up the need for a rapid exit track when we proceed with a major expansion project," he said.

Air India may hire new COO next January after Gustav Baldauf's resignation

State-run Air India will pick a new chief operating officer (COO) by January and prefer someone from the domestic industry, according to a top executive. The airline's board has also created a post of COO for its low-cost arm, Air India Express.
Cash-strapped Air India has been operating without a COO since February when expatriate Gustav Baldauf, who held the post with a hefty pay package, resigned following difference with the government. "We are looking for professionals from the Indian aviation industry this time and would not prefer to have a foreign national, mainly because you can't pay them anything below Rs 3 crore," Air India chairman and managing director Rohit Nandan said, adding that the new appointment would happen within four months.
AI had appointed three professionals in 2010 - COO Baldauf, chief training officer Stephan Sukumar and Air India Express CEO Pawan Arora - on salaries ranging from Rs1-3 crore to help turn around the organisation.
While Arora was asked to go last November, Baldauf exited early this year followed by Sukumar.

Close shave for 3 jets at Chennai airport

Three aircraft came too close for comfort at Chennai airport on Saturday morning, forcing a Jet Airways flight to abort take-off at the last minute.
The pilot of the Jet Airways flight, which was moving to take-off on runway 25 at 8.40am with 120 passengers, saw an Indigo aircraft had not vacated the farther end of the runway, and stopped. Meanwhile, an Air India flight from Delhi was on its way to land. Seeing that the Jet flight was still on the runway, the Air India plane which was descending, did a 'go around', pulling up again. With the Air India plane hovering in the vicinity, the air traffic control asked the Jet pilot to reject take-off. The Air India flight landed 22 minutes later, at 9.02am.
"A miscalculation on the part of the ATC in measuring the distance between the flights and the time caused the problem," an aviation official said. An ATC source said such instances happen, but often go unreported. "There was a possibility of a collision if the Jet aircraft was allowed to take off as the Air India flight, carrying 160 passengers, was above the airport. It could also have proved tough for the Jet flight to maintain a lower height immediately after take-off," said a pilot who was present at the airport.
A minimum distance of three miles (5 km) is to be maintained between two aircraft in motion near Indian airports and this is often kept at 5 to 10 miles in Chennai.

SpiceJet Bomb Scare Creates Chaos in Kathmandu

Close on the heels of all 19 people on board a domestic flight in Nepal perishing in a plane crash, Indian budget airline SpiceJet's Delhi flight was delayed due to a bomb scare, unleashing chaos at Katmandu's lone international airport Sunday.
The flight, scheduled to take off at 10.55 a.m. from Kathmandu, was halted after rumours that a bomb had been stowed away on board.
A private television channel said the bomb scare arose after an altercation among three Indian women and an American Buddhist nun.
The pilot reportedly heard the nun saying she had a bomb and the aircraft came to a halt on the runway.

500 fliers suffer in oil arm-twist

Around 500 holidayers returning to Tehran from Thai seaside resort Phuket landed in a mess at Kolkata airport late on Monday night as Indian Oil refused to refuel the two aircraft till dues were cleared. Till the transaction took place on Tuesday afternoon, the hapless passengers remained stranded in Kolkata, a bulk of them cooped up inside an aircraft for nearly 12 hours because the airport did not have the requisite infrastructure to host them.
When the nightmare finally ended and the flights took off late on Tuesday afternoon, the passengers were famished, having had only a sparse meal in those 12 hours. Those travelling economy class were worse off with feet swollen and toes numb from the long hours in the cramped seats. The toilets also stank as they remained dirty for nearly a day. When the passengers finally reached their destination late on Tuesday, they had no fond memories of the wonderful time in Thailand's fun resort. They carried home a traumatic experience that is sure to haunt them for a long time to come.
Iranian private carrier Mahan Air, which has had a dodgy record with allegations of forged acquisition of three Boeing 747-400 aircraft and a ban within the European Union for a year, has off late been making a technical halt in Kolkata during the return journey from Phuket to Tehran.

Defective Landing - DGCA Recommends Action Against Pilot

Relating to an incident in which the pilot of an Air India Express flight committed mistake in landing his aircraft at Bajpe airport on June 25 this year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has instructed the concerned to take action against the pilot.
The flight had touched down farther than the prescribed area. Realizing his mistake and the dangers it posed, the pilot applied brakes, because of which a catastrophe was averted. Although no loss of lives or property had take place in this incident, the DGCA had conducted inquiry into the incident as per rules. It has come to the conclusion that the pilot was at fault.

Woodbridge TSA officer sentenced for stealing from Indian travelers

A township man who worked as a lead transportation security officer for the Transportation Security Administration at Newark Liberty International Airport has been sentenced to six months home confinement for stealing money from travelers during security screenings.
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said Al Raimi, 30, of Woodbridge also was ordered to pay $24,150 restitution to his victims and pay a $3,000 fine when he was sentenced on Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares in Newark federal court. He also was sentenced to three years’ supervised release.
Raimi had previously admitted that he and his supervisor regularly stole from travelers when he pleaded guilty Feb. 24 to theft by a government officer. Between October 2009 to September 2010, Raimi was a lead transportation security officer at the B-3 security checkpoint for Terminal B at Newark Airport.
During that time, Raimi stole between $10,000 and $30,000 in cash from travelers.
According to a complaint against Arato, the B-3 checkpoint where Raimi worked served Air India flights. Travelers to India began complaining about money and other valuables missing from carry-on luggage after secondary checks in August 2009. Most of the passengers were non-English-speaking Indian women, according to the complaint.

CIAL to have new world-class terminal for international travel

In an attempt to match up to the passenger amenities offered by new-generation airports such as the Bangalore and Hyderabad airports, and envisaging the future growth in passenger traffic, the Cochin International Airport Limited here is all set to establish a new international terminal having a higher passenger-handling capacity.
According to top company officials, CIAL has worked out a proposal to develop a world-class workstation for international travel, roughly estimated to cost about Rs.250 crore.
The plan will be presented before the company Director Board on September 24 and the works on the project will begin soon after receiving its approval.
“The upcoming terminal will have the capacity to handle about 2,000 passengers an hour as against the 1,200-passengers capacity of the existing international terminal,'' a senior company official said.
After the launch of the new terminal, the existing international terminal will be converted into a domestic terminal while the present domestic terminal will be allotted for private executive jets and airport retailing activities.
Given the current rate of growth, the annual passenger traffic through CIAL is expected to reach 75 lakh from the current 43 lakh by

Virgin pledges commitment to Caribbean

Virgin Atlantic has revealed plans to expand its Caribbean routes, despite fears that the sharp rise in UK Air Passenger Duty could deter Brits from travelling.

Pledging its commitment to the Caribbean, Virgin announced plans to add flights to Barbados, Cuba, Tobago and Grenada from this winter. It is also planning to offer 14% more Premium Economy seats on Caribbean services.

Earlier this year, Virgin announced plans to stop flying to Kingston, Jamaica, from next April, due to the ‘impending unsustainability of the route. According to reports, The rising cost of fuel and Air Jamaica’s planned re-launch of a London to Kingston service were among the factors the airline considered in reaching its decision.

But during the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s State of the Industry conference, Edmund Rose, Virgin Atlantic director of commercial and revenue planning, revealed: “The Caribbean is tremendously important to Virgin Atlantic.”

The sharp rise in APD is thought to have had a great impact on the tourist-dependent Caribbean, which falls into a higher tax band than the US. Many industry professionals fear that APD distorts the tourism market and could damage economic prosperity.

World Travel & Tourism Council president David Scowsill has called on the UK government to abolish Air Passenger Duty to prevent it harm to the Caribb

World Travel & Tourism Council president David Scowsill has called on the UK government to abolish Air Passenger Duty to prevent it harm to the Caribbean economy.

Speaking at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation hosted State of the Industry Conference in St Martin, Scowsill argued APD was also detrimental to the Caribbean community living in the UK.

APD distorts the tourism market and damages the economic prosperity of the Caribbean which is the most tourism dependent region in the world, argued Scowsill.

According to a report by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, arrivals from the UK to the Caribbean are already declining while those from other source markets are increasing.

In November 2010, it was estimated that the average decline in UK arrivals to the Caribbean would be in the region of 15 per cent once the full impact of the latest rise in APD has taken effect.

During the first half of 2011, the impact was even greater at 20 per cent on 2008 passenger levels.

With the adoption of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme from 2012, it is time for the UK Government to recognise that APD is a tax whose time has come - and gone.

It must be phased out now or at least redesigned.

“APD has always been a blunt instrument and a bad tax.

“The distance-based system is discriminatory to the Caribbean and the Caribbean people living in the UK. The Caribbean is closer to the UK than the US West Coast yet it is in a higher band,” said Scowsill.

The UK Government is choking the growth of travel in the form of APD.

APD is cited numerously as the reason for the withdrawal of marginal air routes, and the losses or failure of travel companies. More importantly, it is dampening demand for travel out of the UK, as many British consumers just cannot afford the extra amount levied on the price of each ticket.

This taxation costs the industry £2.5 billion each year and threatens the UK’s international competitiveness status as a tourism destination. Others in Continental Europe have already started to offer packages from other European cities. It is bad for UK GDP and bad for the consumer.

Heathrow unveils transport pods

Automatic pods to transport passengers using Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport have been unveiled following a year-long trial.

The computer-driven electric vehicles can carry up to four passengers and their luggage at speeds of up to 25 mph along a dedicated 3.8km track, between the business car park and the main airport building. Heathrow passengers can choose their destinations using laser sensors.

The system – which started life as a Bristol University project – was developed by UK company Ultra and BAA and consists of 21 low energy, battery powered, driverless, zero emission vehicles.

Airport operator BAA, revealed that the batteries recharge themselves when the pods, which use sensors, are stationary.

According to ULTra, , the 30 million pound project, which took six years to develop, could transport up to 500,000 passengers each year and replace 50,000 shuttle bus journeys.

British Airways chief executive Keith Williams blames APD for Caribbean cuts

British Airways has announced plans to reduce flights to the Caribbean following a sharp rise in Air Passenger Duty.

Blaming falling passenger numbers on the punitive tax, BA chief executive, Keith Williams, confirmed the news during the Caribbean Tourism Organisation conference in St Martin.

Addressing an industry audience, Williams said: “The Caribbean is an important destination for us and we have a long heritage of serving the region.

“However, we cannot deny the reality that demand is not as high as it has been.

“Taxation is most certainly a factor in this and, sadly, a factor in our decision to reduce our frequency to the Caribbean next summer.”

He added: “We continue to protest against the rises in APD and I hope the government’s recent consultation will lead to a more equitable banding system that does not penalise the Caribbean.”

Among the reductions in capacity to the Caribbean, British Airways is expected to cancel its two weekly flights from Gatwick to Montego Bay, Jamaica, next March.

Williams explained the tax increases the cost of a flight from London to the Caribbean for a family of four by $470. Consequently, fewer people are prepared to travel.

According to a report by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, arrivals from the UK to the Caribbean are already declining, while those from other source markets are increasing.

In November 2010, it was estimated that the average decline in UK arrivals to the Caribbean would be in the region of 15 per cent, once the full impact of the latest rise in APD has taken effect.

During the first half of 2011, the impact was even greater at 20 per cent on 2008 passenger levels.

The World Travel & Tourism Council has also recently called on the British government to recalibrate the tax.

World Travel Awards

Next month, World Travel Awards will host its annual Caribbean & The Americans Gala Ceremony at Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort & Private Island in Jamaica.

The event is set to attract the top decision-makers and thought-leaders from across the Americas and Caribbean as they compete for the most influential accolades in travel.

Soon, Rs 2,900 crore deal for acquiring 75 Swiss Pilatus PC-7 turbo basic trainers jets

India is swiftly moving towards inking another major deal for training aircraft to teach rookie pilots the intricacies of combat flying before it stitches up the over $10.4 billion (Rs 42,000 crore) project to acquire 126 top-notch fighters.

The Rs 2,900 crore deal for acquiring 75 Swiss Pilatus PC-7 turbo basic trainers is in the final stages now, with the "note" prepared for the Cabinet Committee on Security being "vetted" by the finance ministry at present, say defence ministry sources.

"While the contract for 126 MMRCA ( medium multi-role combat aircraft) is likely to be inked only by January-February, the trainer deal will be signed this year itself," said a source.

Though the Pilatus trainer had emerged the cheapest among other contenders like American Hawker-Beechcraft's T-6C Texan-II and Korean Aerospace's KT-1 after flight trials, it was dogged by some allegations of irregularities in the procurement process. But MoD has dismissed them, holding the negotiations were completed with the Swiss company based on "its absolutely valid commercial offe

Air fares rise as oil companies raise ATF prices

There's simply no escape from price hikes, whether on ground or in air. Airlines have started raising fares after oil companies hiked aviation turbine fuel (ATF, jet fuel) prices.

India's largest airline Jet has increased fuel surcharge by Rs 200 on its domestic flights from Saturday. Other domestic airlines are going to follow suit, but in a staggered manner over next few days to avoid charge of cartelization.

"This (hike) will be applicable on all flights of Jet Airways, Jet Konnect and JetLite, for sale and travel effective Saturday," a statement by Jet said. Other airlines did not offer comment but industry sources said domestic fares are going to rise in coming days.

However, the pinch could be more than Rs 200 effectively in the coming festive season. While airlines announce hikes in fuel surcharge when jet fuel gets dearer, price movement in basic fares follows a complex bucket system, which keeps going north as seats get sold.

IndiGo to increase flights to Singapore

India's low-fare airline IndiGo has said it will increase flights to Singapore as the current overall limit, permitted by the air services agreement between the two countries, remains underutilised.

As of now, the Indian side does not even utilise 50 per cent of the flights allowed under the agreement, which leaves scope for increasing flights, IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh told PTI.

"But, we hope, this will now change and as we increase flights," said Ghosh, who launched IndiGo's first low fare service on September 15 to Singapore.

IndiGo, though low cost airline, flies under the scheduled air flight agreement between India and Singapore, he pointed out.

Ghosh sees a further increase in passenger traffic between the two countries, and has planned a number of holiday packages both ways as IndiGo increases flights to Singapore from "one per day to at least two and preferably three per day" in the next 300 days.

Laguna Phuket Seeking Sponsorship for Kids’ Survival Swim Programme

Laguna Phuket is harnessing the enthusiasm of triathletes in this year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship to launch its latest community initiative that will provide survival swim lessons for thousands of local youngsters.

Hundreds of triathletes registering for the two events are being asked to raise money through online sponsorships to help raise an estimated THB 600,000 (US$ 19,835) required to set up and run the 12-month programme.

Thai Health Authority statistics show drowning as the highest cause of death for Thai children under the age of 15 and teaching children to be competent in deep water, with the ability to get to safety, is a major priority for coastal regions.

The Survival Swim Programme is being developed with support from Cherngtalay Municipality, Phuket Lifeguard Club, Phuket International Academy’s Thanyupura Sports & Leisure Club, Surf Lifesaving of Australia and Laguna Holiday Club.

It will teach more than 2,600 children aged 12-15 years in Thalang District schools in Phuket how to save themselves if they fall into deep water; and be staged on the beaches of Bang Tao, Municipality swimming pools and Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club.

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon on 27 November and Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship on 4 December will draw hundreds of triathletes from around the world to Phuket, who are now being asked to arrange sponsorships.

Triathletes – who face gruelling swims in the first leg of their triathlon challenges – are competent swimmers, aware of respect for water and the importance of this vital life skill.

JAL Partners Panasonic to Offer Inflight Internet Access

JAL is to begin offering high-speed Internet connection onboard select international flights from the summer of 2012, utilizing technologies from Panasonic Avionics Corporation.

Panasonic's broadband Ku connectivity solution eXConnect, will first be installed on JAL's fleet of Boeing 777s and introduced on routes between Japan and its gateways in Europe as well as in North America.

The airline plans to eventually equip its entire long-range fleet with this function, subsequently expanding this service to the rest of its international network.

The new inflight service will not only allow customers in every cabin class to check and send emails, stay abreast with updates on their social media network and browse the internet, but also allow fast transfers of large data files just as in a Wi-Fi environment on the ground. Charges will apply for the service, and the cost for usage is expected to be announced closer to the launch.

Hong Kong Cricket Sixes 2011: All Stars Team Unveiled

Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi, two of the most destructive batsmen in the history of cricket, are set to dazzle fans at the Karp Group Hong Kong Cricket Sixes at the Kowloon Cricket Club from 28-30 October 2011.

Joining them in the All Stars line-up are a coterie of premier cricketers from around the globe including one of the world’s fastest bowlers, Australia’s Shaun Tait, South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs, Pakistan’s Abdul Razzaq and the International Cricket Council’s Affiliate Player of the year, Ryan ten Doeschate of The Netherlands.

Sri Lanka’s Jayasuriya and Pakistan’s Afridi have gone head-to-head with their batting exploits and are recognised as two of the most feared batsmen in the world. The duo are ideally suited to Hong Kong’s unique format with hitting sixes almost second nature for the pair.

Master blaster Jayasuriya held the record for the most sixes in one-day internationals – 270 – until Shahid Afridi, nicknamed “Boom Boom” for his aggressive batting style, overhauled it to stand top of the list with 289. The picturesque Kowloon Cricket Club will be tailor-made for the duo who will carry the hopes of the All Stars in the expanded 12-team tournament.

“We are thrilled to have both Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi playing on the same team. They are outstanding cricketers who can demolish any bowling attack and are more than capable bowlers themselves. Fans are in for a treat,” said Captain Shahazada Saleem, president of the Hong Kong Cricket Association.

Jayasuriya, who holds the record for the fastest 50 in One Day Internationals (ODIs) - off just 17 balls - is a more than capable bowler with his left arm spin having claimed 323 wickets. He is the only player to score more than 13,000 runs and take more than 300 wickets in

Air passenger ‘tried to open door’ mid-flight

A 22 year old holidaymaker attempted to open the doors of a plane at 36,000 feet because he thought it was a flight simulator, according to reports.

The Thomson Airways flight from Palma, Majorca, to Newcastle was diverted to Gatwick, where the man, from Northumberland, was arrested.

According to witnesses, when his friends tried to restrain him, he replied: “It’s okay, we are just on a simulator.”

Passengers and crew took him back to his seat and he was restrained with seat belts until the plane landed.

New British Airways chief to make appearance at WTM 2011

British Airways’ newly-appointed chief executive Keith Williams has been confirmed to speak at World Travel Market 2011 as part of its Business Day program on Thursday, November 10th.

Williams took over at the airline in May when the UK flag-carrier merged with its Spanish counterpart, Iberia, in a £4.3 billion deal creating one of the world’s biggest airline groups.

The former British Airways financial director will be quizzed by WTM’s Aviation Consultant John Strickland on a wide range of issues affecting the airlines, the aviation sector, and the travel and tourism industry.

The session – titled The Big Talk with Keith Williams – is an unmissable event taking place in Platinum Suite 4 at 15:30.

Williams said: “The aviation industry is facing change and intense challenge.

“At British Airways we are part of consolidation and investing in new aircraft, products, and services to put customers at the heart of our plans.

“I look forward to discussing these and other trends at World Travel Market.”

Furthermore, a high-profile and influential industry panel will support TV star Karren Brady in the headline Business Day session – Talk Business: Fight to Survive with Karren Brady.

The industry panel for the session includes:

  • Steve Byrne, group managing director, Travel Counsellors, operating in the UK, Ireland, USA, Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, and Canada.

  • David Jones, chief executive, representing SMEs at the European Tourism Action Group.

  • Chris Photi, partner in White Hart Associates, an advisor to a diverse selection of travel industry clients from large FTSE 100 companies to small entrepreneur-owned and operated travel companies.

  • Caroline Rifkind, senior manager, Travel Division of the global professional services firm Pricewaterhousecoopers.

The esteemed panel will help Karren advise the industry – particularly small- and medium-sized businesses – how to survive and prosper against a background of poor consumer confidence, faltering economies, and banks that refuse to give loans.

The Talk Business session, which takes place at 11:00 am in Platinum Suite 4, will be chaired by BBC business journalist Aaron Hazelhurst.

World Travel Market Chairman Fiona Jeffery said: “World Travel Market Business Day was extremely well received last year.

“There’s an ever present fear that small- and medium-sized travel businesses (SMEs) in the UK and Europe will go bust.

“Trading conditions have been even tougher this year than anticipated, intensifying the fight for customers, new business strategies, and markets.”

World Travel Market’s Business Day launched last year’s with a keynote speech from business guru and former director of the Confederation of British Industry Lord Digby Jones

Housewife & Two Indian Men Detained, Stripped Searched After 9/11 Flight Landed in Detroit

Shoshana Hebshi will never forget where she was on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. She and two other airline passengers were handcuffed and strip-searched after flying into Detroit on Sunday.
No charges were filed against Hebshi, a self-described "half-Arab, half-Jewish housewife living in suburban Ohio," or the two Indian men sitting next to her, who were flying in from Denver when the crew of Frontier Airlines Flight 623 alerted authorities that they were reportedly behaving suspiciously.
n a blog post titled "Some real Shock and Awe: Racially profiled and cuffed in Detroit," Hebshi, an American citizen, told her tale of temporary detainment, which she had begun to share with Twitter followers in real-time - until handcuffs were placed on her wrists.
Hebshi, a writer and editor and mother of twin sons, didn't know the other two passengers in Row 12. They were Indian men, she wrote. And they didn't know each other. But they got a lot closer when they were all crammed into the back of a squad car.
What happened, according to Frontier spokesman Peter Kowalchuk, begins with a bathroom.
"One of the males, who was not feeling well, got up to use the restroom during the flight. The other male got up at approximately the same time to use the restroom. The female remained seated in her row," the FBI said in a statement.
Crews reported the men sitting next to Hebshi were spending "an extraordinarily long time" in the plane's lavatory, Kowalchuk said.
Amid heightened security fears on the tenth anniversary of the 2001 attacks, no one was taking chances.
•After the plane landed, far from any terminals, the captain told everyone to remain in their seats or "there would be consequences," Hebshi wrote. A group of officers had gathered outside.

Mangalore Air Crash - Victims' Families Decide to Approach Supreme Court

Feeling humiliated and harassed, Mangalore Air India Crash Victims Families Association has decided to appeal to the Supreme Court (SC) against a decision of Kerala High Court (HC).
It may be recalled that a single-judge bench of Kerala HC, based on a petition filed by the association, had ordered Air India to pay compensation at the rate of Rs 75 lac per victim relating the above crash. Air India had questioned this decision in the division bench of the HC. The division bench not only stayed operation of the single-judge bench order, but also asked the victims to find a solution to the problem by entering into a process of dialogue with Air India. Aggrieved by the order, the association is thinking of approaching SC.
A meeting of victims of the crash is being held at Sahodaya Hall in the city at 11.30 am on September 18, for discussing the above decision. The meeting is proposed to be organized to hold detailed discussions on the pros and cons, cost, etc of approaching the SC, before taking a final decision.

Air India doesn't have money for 27 Boeing 787 Dreamliners: Vayalar Ravi

The ministry of civil aviation is having second thoughts on plans by Air India to take delivery of 27 Boeing 787 aircraft, better known as the Dreamliner, as it would aggravate the debt burden of the financially stressed national carrier.
"Air India does not have the money to pay for the 27 Boeing planes. Air India will not increase its debt burden right now," said civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi Tuesday at a public event in Delhi. Air India had ordered 27 Dreamliners in 2005 from US aerospace giant
Boeing was part of a massive fleet programme in which the state-owned airline decided to acquire 68 aircraft worth Rs 30,000 crore. This plan was questioned by the Comptroller and Auditor General ( CAG) in a report submitted last Thursday on the ground that the orders were based on unrealistic assumptions about growth.
Air India, which faces the daunting task of repaying debt of Rs 43,000 crore, may have to bear an additional debt burden of Rs 17,000 crore to finance the Dreamliners, the newest aircraft from Boeing.

Hawaiian Airlines to Launch Flights to Fukuoka, Japan

Hawaiian Airlines is planning to add daily nonstop flights between Honolulu and Fukuoka, its third destination in Japan, beginning April 2012 and pending Japan government approval.

Fukuoka will be the fourth destination in Asia that Hawaiian has introduced recently to its route network, following the launches of service to Tokyo in November 2010, Seoul in January 2011, and Osaka in July 2011.

“Demand for our services in Japan from Tokyo and Osaka has been extremely strong, and we are responding to similar demand for Hawaii from the travel community in Fukuoka,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president and CEO. “Our new Fukuoka flights will expand Hawaiian’s reach into an entirely new region of Japan, while providing a substantial boost to Hawaii’s visitor industry.”

Fukuoka is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and the economic center of Kyushu, the third largest and most southerly of Japan’s four main islands. Altogether, Kyushu has approximately 13 million residents, of which approximately five million residents live in Fukuoka Prefecture.

    ibis Becomes a “Mega Brand”

Accor has unveiled a new strategy for its ibis, all seasons and Etap Hotel brands, with the three becoming ibis, ibis styles and ibis budget respectively.

Accor says that the implementation of this new segmentation, which is expected to be completed worldwide by early 2013, will “increase the clarity, consistency and strength of the three economy brands”, and enable Accor to achieve critical mass in several markets as well as boosting each brand’s notoriety and growth potential.

A vast communication campaign will accompany this rebranding in 2012. Its objective will be to capitalize on the image of the ibis “Mega Brand”, as Accor calls it, by highlighting the shared DNA through three structuring concepts: modernity, simplicity and well-being, while aiming to clearly differentiate the distinct offers of each of the three economy brands.

Google seeks to boost travel presence with Flight Search

Internet search giant Google has unveiled its latest foray into online travel, with the launch of the new Flight Search product.

The move follows the controversial $700 million buy-out of ITA software earlier this year.

However, a roll-out to international departures is expected in months.

Concerns Google would have undue market share following the ITA acquisition prompted an anti-trust investigation in the United States in April.

What the Rugby World Cup Means to New Zealand

The Rugby World Cup 2011 could generate US$1.67 billion (NZ$2 billion) for the global sports economy with overseas visitors to New Zealand generating US$654 million (NZ$782.5 million), according to new research commissioned by MasterCard.

MasterCard’s research - the Economic Impact on Global Rugby Part IV: Rugby World Cup 2011 - finds that sport associated economic activity may be worth up to US$11.7 billion (NZ$14 billion) to the New Zealand economy by the end of the decade.

The research is the fourth installment in a series commissioned by MasterCard Worldwide and undertaken by the Centre for the International Business of Sport (CIBS) at Coventry University, following economic impact reports on the 2010 Six Nations and Tri Nations Rugby Tournaments and a report on Rugby’s Emerging Markets in April.

Royal Jordanian to resume flights to Libya soon

Amman - President/CEO, Hussein Dabbas said that Royal Jordanian will resume flights to Tripoli and Benghazi, in Libya, soon.
The company suspended its operations to these two cities after turmoil erupted in Libya last February.

Dabbas said that the company will restart operating between Amman, and Tripoli and Benghazi once all the necessary approvals are obtained from the concerned authorities—expected soon—and the readiness of the Libyan airports to receive flights is ensured.

RJ is expected to resume its flights to Benghazi by the end of this week and to Tripoli immediately after.
Dabbas also said that initially the flights to Benghazi and Tripoli will be frequent, probably daily, to be able to accommodate the strong demand on travel between the two countries, especially on the part of businessmen, students and Jordanian workforce in Libya, as well as Libyan citizens who come to Jordan seeking medical treatment.
Royal Jordanian used to operate five weekly flights to Tripoli and two weekly flights to Benghazi before the unrest erupted in Libya.

The first British Airways electric bus lands at Heathrow

British Airways is leading the way by becoming the first airline at Heathrow Airport to introduce an all-electric bus service for staff between Terminal 5 and the company’s headquarters at Waterside.

The bus is 8.1m long with a seating capacity for 24 passengers plus standing room, and has a special “green” themed British Airways livery. It will operate between T5 and Waterside covering 17,710 miles a year, cutting around 20 tonnes of CO2 emissions in comparison to the current fossil fuelled buses.

Mark Wiles, Property Compliance Manager for British Airways said: ”Introducing this environmentally friendly battery powered bus is a further commitment by British Airways in cutting our carbon footprint at Heathrow through improving our ground energy usage.”

Antony Goozee, Business Development Director for Flights Hallmark added: “The electric bus is a new and innovative step for Flights Hallmark and British Airways, it is vital that we continue to look at alternative methods for powering vehicles and reducing our emissions”.

Flights Hallmark, who operates the service for British Airways, purchased an Optare Solo EV battery-powered bus for the BA 5 service that commenced on September 5 2011.

British Airways to introduce First & Business Class to Moscow

For the first time, customers on British Airways’ London Heathrow to Moscow service will be able to sample the airline’s award-winning services in First and business class from next year.

The changes were announced during a UK trade delegation to Russia hosted by Prime Minister, David Cameron, alongside several major British business leaders.

British Airways has three return flights to Moscow’s Domodedevo airport per day. From April 2012, this route will change from a short-haul service operated with two cabins to a long-haul operation offering customers up to four classes of travel. This means customers will have the opportunity to enjoy the airline’s fully flat-beds, comprehensive in-flight entertainment and sample a wide selection of meals and drinks in unrivalled comfort. No other airline currently offers such a premium service on the four-hour flight between the two capital cities

Sir Martin Broughton, chairman of British Airways, who accompanied David Cameron to Moscow to represent British business, said: “We are proud to have been flying to Russia for over fifty years. It is an important and growing market for us and we want to reflect our commitment to the region and our customers by enhancing our services and increasing the number of seats that are available to Moscow.”

British Airways has close ties with leading Russian airline, S7. The two airlines are members of the oneworld alliance and launched a code-share agreement earlier this year which means that customers can experience a seamless service between the UK and many destinations in Russia, transferring at Domodedovo airport. Both airlines’ customers benefit from competitive through fares, co-ordinated schedules and excellent customer service. It is hoped that the codeshare agreement will be expanded in the coming months so that even more parts of Russia will be linked by air services to the UK.

    Heathrow reports record August

Heathrow handled 6.6 million passengers in August 2011, up 0.7% on the previous year and the airport’s busiest ever August. In addition, the airport reported 82.2% of seats were filled on Heathrow flights.

North Atlantic was the strongest performing market for Heathrow, with 71,000 more passengers than in August 2010. There was a significant increase in passenger flights on a number of North Atlantic routes including Montreal (up 50.0% in August 2011 compared to August 2010) and Detroit (up 41.9%). These figures are particularly notable given the impact of Hurricane Irene. BAA estimates that around 40,000 additional passengers would have travelled through Heathrow had it not been for the hurricane.

BAA’s UK airports handled 10.7 million passengers in August 2011, an increase of 0.2% on the same month last year. All markets grew except UK domestic, which was down by 5.5% as a result of reduced capacity. At Heathrow, domestic traffic fell by 13.2%. Other long-haul traffic grew by 0.6% and European scheduled was up by 0.3%.

There was strong growth in passenger numbers at BAA’s Scottish airports. A 3.0% rise in passengers made August the sixth consecutive record month for Edinburgh. Passenger numbers grew by 5.5% at Glasgow and 6.7% at Aberdeen respectively, compared to August 2010.

Southampton saw a 2.4% rise in passengers and Stansted was alone in recording a drop in traffic of 5.1%. This was a result of cutbacks in airline capacity. However, Stansted reported a record load factor, filling 89.3% of seats on its planes.
