NEWS | Smuggler of iridium, designer watches gets one year in jail

Parminder Singh, who smuggled 20 diamond-studded Franck Muller Geneve watches and six other less expensive watches in an Air India plane toilet has been sent to jail for a year.
He was detained under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (Cofeposa) Act, meant to put habitual smugglers behind bars. A committee comprising officials from many government departments cleared a proposal to charge him under Cofeposa Act in September as Parminder has past cases of smuggling registered against him.
In January, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials found the watches worth nearly Rs 3 crore in an Abu Dhabi-Mumbai Airbus. Each Franck Muller Geneve watch costs Rs 10-15 lakh. The watches and some chemical packets were in a bag, hidden in a cavity in the aircraft's wall. The DRI acted on source information and was not aware about Parminder's involvement.
DRI suspected Parminder because of his past smuggling cases. The passenger manifest on days before the watch seizure showed Singh travelled from Bangkok to Delhi by an AI aircraft. Singh had travelled by another airline from Hong Kong to Bangkok .

NEWS | 3 years after PM’s announcement, construction still to begin at Mohali airport

The Airport Authority of India has announced that an international airport will soon be constructed in Mohali. The Prime Minister is expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony.
The Prime Minister had on January 5, 2008, announced that an international airport would be constructed in Mohali within two years. However, apart from the boundary wall, there is no other construction. The ground is used by locals to rear cattles. Even a road connecting the proposed airport to the main road has not been constructed.
The construction of the airport has been delayed due to various reasons. First the administration took a long time to acquire land. Then it mulled over the format of joint-venture to be adopted. And finally there was a controversy regarding the name of the airport between Punjab and Haryana governments.

NEWS |AI to train pilots for Boeing 787 in Singapore

Air India will train its pilots in Singapore for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, due for delivery from December. The move is sparking a protest from one of its pilots’ unions, on promotion issues.
Beginning this week, about 30 pilots (drawn equally from AI and the erstwhile Indian Airlines) go to Singapore for training on simulators. The government carrier is going ahead with this although acquisition of the planes is formally still awaiting a government okay.
"The training will take 15-30 days. Those selected are senior captains and first officers from Boeing 747, Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 fleets. The training slots have kept in mind the delivery schedule. Following the simulator training, the pilots will take a check flight with pilots from Boeing,'' an airline source said. Initially, about 70 AI pilots would be trained. "Boeing is also providing a simulator to Air India. It’s a part of the aircraft acquisition deal,'' he added. However the decision to hand over the simulator hinges on the airline's decision to take the deliveries.
While the airline management has approved the cockpit crew training and has also inducted about 150 cabin crew on three-year contracts, it has to battle a new controversy ahead of the induction of the planes. Members of the Indian Pilots Guild , the union representing AI pilots before the merger with Indian Airlines, are opposing the management's decision to also select erstwhile IA pilots for the Boeing 787. It may file a peition in the courts and is also threatening a strike.
"There is a lot of heartburn among our pilots. We feel our promotions and career progression will get affected if erstwhile IA pilots are selected for the training. The Boeing 787 was being selected for AI before its merger and IA opted for 43 Airbus A320 planes. Only ex-IA pilots fly these Airbus planes and their career progression was not affected. We feel we are being discriminated against,'' said an IPG member. The airline management is expected to meet the union in the next few days on the issue.

NEWS | Another pilots' strike may hijack AI's revival plans

Air India's revival and travel plans of passengers hang in balance as yet another strike looms large on the crisis-ridden airline. Simmering discontent between the pilots of erstwhile Air India and Indian Airlines has reached a flashpoint with AI pilots currently holding a ballot on whether they should go on a strike over the merged airline's decision to allow their IA counterparts to also fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliners that are yet to join the fleet.
The government is yet to decide whether the almost bankrupt airline can afford to take delivery of these planes. IPG has moved court against the management decision and sources say could give a strike notice in a couple of days. AI pilots sent on deputation to its budget carrier , AI Express, have already started reporting sick, something that has led to flight cancellations in recent past. This agitation, a senior pilot said, could engulf AI too.
IA pilots had earlier this year gone on strike to seek wage parity with their AI counterparts. They resent the fact that AI pilots get fixed pay for 80 hours irrespective of the number of hours they actually fly for while IA pilots get paid for actual hours flown - a number that has seen a sharp decline in past few years. They had demanded some IA pilots be sent for 787 training so that the remaining can have more flying hours - and hence pay.

NEWS | Air India pilots flying global routes on war path

A section of Air India pilots operating long distance international flights has threatened to go on strike in mid-November to press their demand for immediate payment of salary and incentives pending for the last few months.
In addition, they have sought a solution to issues pertaining to their “career progression and promotion”.
Pilots of the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) operate flights to the UK, the US, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
They feel that the erstwhile IA team is being given preference for the training of Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes scheduled to join the fleet early next year.
However, a decision on the strike will be taken through a ballot.
“A case has been filed in the Bombay High Court and a decision on the strike will be taken in the middle of next week,” an IPG spokesperson told Business Line.
The IPG represents about 300 pilots of the pre-merger AI, while 1,400 pilots of the then IA are affiliated to the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA).
The ICPA, however, reiterated that they would not join any form of agitation with their IPG colleagues, the sources said.

NEWS |The highest (and lowest) airports in the world

Skyscanner, the portal that compares low-cost flights, presents the ranking of the world's highest airports.
These airports, built at incredible heights, are commercial airports from which both freight and passenger flights are operated and some of them were formerly used for military purposes, known as Advanced Landing Ground. Nowadays some routes are served by charter flights or private companies, which manage to provide links at these heights.
South America has by far the highest concentration of 'Above 3,000m' runways, and, to be more specific, Peru and Bolivia, are at the top. The airport with the highest altitude from Earth is the Peruvian 'San Rafael' in the Puno region, south-east of the country, whose asphalt strip that allows aircraft to takeoff and land is 4,396 metres high.
However, on the other side of the Earth, the Chinese authorities announced that from 2014, the title of highest airport will go the Tibetan airport Nagqu, which when when completed, will reach the amazing height of 4,436 metres. Meanwhile, Tibet is satisfied with the second place achieved thanks to the airport of Chamdo at 4,334 metres of altitude. The third highest one is located in India at Fukche, and in this case the height is of an impressive 4,176 metres.
There are those lands who almost touch the sky when landing and there are those who land under the sea level. If you want to venture in locations which are totally opposite to those mentioned above, then you might consider to fly to Bar Yehuda Airfield, south of the Judean desert in Israel, where the runway is 378 metres below sea level. However, there is no need to go so far, just get on a flight to Amsterdam, whose airport is 5 metres below sea level. Even Venice retains its eternal relationship with water, in fact, its airport is accessible by ferry directly from the city.

NEWS | Massive search for MiG-29 wreckage on

Massive combing operations continued Wednesday, with trekkers managing to climb snow-bound peaks in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul Valley to locate a missing IAF MiG-29 combat jet and its pilot.
The jet, with pilot Squadron Leader DS Tomar, crashed in the Himalayan terrain at elevations ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 feet above the sea level Oct 18. It was on a night flying training mission and took off from Adampur near Jalandhar in Punjab.
“Trekkers of the Ladakh Scouts and local mountaineers Wednesday managed to scale some of the peaks and are combing the area,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Khajana Ram said.
The area witnessed moderate snowfall in the past few days that hampered the operations.
The Ladakh Scouts, other elements of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force air warriors of the mountaineering team are being utilized, according to an IAF statement.
“Over 132 sorties have been flown towards search and rescue operations,” Squadron Leader Priya Joshi, spokesperson for IAF's Western Air Command based in New Delhi, said.

NEWS | The penny-pinching airlines

Amid surging oil prices and depreciating rupee, Indian carriers are becoming frugal.
Chief financial officers neither let an opportunity to save nor leave waste on the table in budget meetings. But when a top airline chief executive recently started signing nearly half the cheques issued by his company, he had no doubts about the CFO’s ability or integrity. In fact, he was trying to evaluate every area of operations, however small, questioning every aspect of the established procedures and looking for better and more efficient ways of doing things — with an eye on minimising costs.
With fuel bill accounting for 50 per cent of operating cost, and lease rentals and staff cost making up another 20 per cent, struggling Indian airlines like SpiceJet, Kingfisher and Jet Airways are left with little choice but to pinch every penny to somehow keep business solvent, even as they await policy clearance that may allow foreign airlines to pick up stake and inject the much needed cash.
SpiceJet and Jet Airways, which reported profits in the first quarter of 2010-11, posted losses of Rs 72 crore and Rs 123 crore, respectively, during the same period this financial year. Kingfisher Airlines’ losses in the first quarter of this financial year widened to Rs 263.5 crore, from Rs 187 crore. However, IndiGo ended the last financial year with a profit of Rs 650 crore.
Amid surging oil prices, depreciating rupee, cut-throat competition, threats of another slowdown, these airlines are combing through every little nook and cranny to cut fat and maximise ancillary revenue — starting from reducing quantities of brochures printed and doing away with disposable coffee cups to taking the green routes to save aviation turbine fuel and generating revenue from advertisements on boarding passes, baggage tags and on in-flight entertainment channels, and fees from excess baggage.

NEWS | Royal Jordanian to move to Terminal 8 at JFK

Royal Jordanian announced that it will move its operations from Terminal 4 to Terminal 8 at John F Kennedy Airport (JFK), beginning November 29.

The move will bring RJ closer to its code share partner American Airlines, which is located at Terminal 8, and enable passengers to fly on board both airlines using a single ticket at competitive prices.

The step will ease RJ passengers’ movement when using American Airlines flights from New York to Amman or from New York to other states, in addition to allowing them to use American Airlines Business Class Lounges at Terminal 8.

At the same time, RJ kept its current handling agent, “SWISSPORT”, to provide passengers and ramp services, thus maintaining smooth handling and saving time for movement between terminals at JFK Airport.

Royal Jordanian and American Airlines, members of oneworld alliance, signed a code share agreement in 2007; it was expanded several times in the past few years. The agreement gives RJ the right to put its code on American Airlines-operated tickets serving many destinations inside the United States, while AA can put its code on tickets operated by RJ from JFK to Amman.
RJ was the first Arab Airline to start operating between the Middle East and New York, in 1977. It now operates 5 weekly flights to JFK Airport.

NEWS | Qatar Airways launches new flights to Benghazi

Qatar Airways has announced plans to launch scheduled flights to Libya’s second largest city of Benghazi on November 1st.

Operating four-times-a-week non-stop from Doha, the newest route will take the number of destination launches by the airline to 15 during 2011.

As part of the airline’s aggressive route expansion strategy to fly to diverse cities, Benghazi is yet another destination which is underserved and will benefit from new international flights.

Benghazi, Libya’s north eastern Mediterranean port city and major economic centre, is a key destination for trade and exports.

Many industries including oil refining, food processing, cement production and tuna fishing, reside in the surrounding region of Cyrenaica, of which Benghazi is the capital.

Qatar Airways has a well-established presence in Libya, having initially operated services to the capital Tripoli eight years ago.

Flights to Tripoli are currently suspended due to the political situation, but are expected to resume soon.

Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker welcomed the latest addition to the growing family of new routes introduced this year.

“Qatar Airways continues to strive to provide a network to cater for all travel segments, conveniently connecting through our Doha hub,” he said.

“Almost a year ago in Nice, I spoke about the possibility of expanding our Libyan operations, and I am delighted that we are now, within this short of a period, set to start flights to Benghazi, another key city in the country.

Encouraged by the increased passenger flow from Gannavaram airport, Air India is launching a new service from Delhi, starting October 30. The 122-seater flight would touch the tarmac at the renovated airport in the next 10 days. "The schedule will be announced a day before the official launch," a senior official of the Airports Authority of India said. The flight would operate via Hyderabad.
The private airliner, Jet Airways, will introduce a direct flight from Mumbai to Gannavaram next month. Chamber of Commerce president M Muralikrishna said the private airlines have responded positively to their pleas to operate a flight to Mumbai. As per the initial schedule, the flight will arrive here at around 3.30 pm and leave for Hyderabad at 3.45 pm, from where it would reach Mumbai at 6.05 pm. In addition to the Mumbai flight, Jet Airways has also agreed to operate a flight between Vijayawada and Vizag.
The Gannavaram airport, which was in limbo till last year, will finally witness a rush of flights, including choppers, in the coming months. The airport, which had only one flight to Hyderabad a few months ago, has five flights a day taking off to various destinations.

NEWS | New Metro, sea routes will connect Navi Mumbai airport

In a recent report submitted to state government and other authorities, 2 metro corridors and 2 water routes have been proposed, in addition to several road and rail routes
Even as the first metro rail corridor is fumbling to the finish line, two new metro corridors have been proposed to connect the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) itself a long way away from completion to south Mumbai and the western suburbs.
In addition, the inland passenger water transport project has also made a comeback, as part of the holistic transport plan to facilitate commute to the airport.
It will require pressing into service catamarans and hovercrafts, officials said. The proposals were pitched in a recent report submitted by international firm LEA Associates to the state government, railways and infrastructure agencies.
A few days ago, Principal Secretary of Urban Development TC Benjamin and railway officials even made a presentation to the World Bank for financing the projects.
"This report will now be studied by the state government and CIDCO who are the owners of the land. It was meant to identify the most feasible modes of transport that could help connecting the new airport," said a senior government official on condition of anonymity.

NEWS | MiG crash spot identified, snowfall hampers search

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Saturday said it has identified the spot in the rocky mountains of Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh where a MiG-29 jet crashed four days ago, but fresh snowfall in the area hampered the search operation.
"The crash spot has been zeroed in but overnight snowfall is hampering the search for the wreckage and the pilot," an IAF official told IANS over phone from the spot.
He said the sappers have identified the crash site and located some more wreckage of the aircraft, but the snow has blanketed the area.
"Now, it will take double the effort to locate the main wreckage because the search parties have to first dig through the snow and then recover the parts of the jet," he added.

NEWS | Air travel to become shorter, greener

Do you find it annoying to fly into Delhi and Mumbai where planes have to hover in the sky, waiting in a seemingly endless queue for touchdown? Ever wondered why this doesn't happen at London, Dubai, Frankfurt or Newark despite the airports catering to many more flights?
It's because flights to busy airports are required to calculate backwards to determine the takeoff time that will make the entire journey short. In contrast, domestic flights in India are happy taking off on time with no care in the world on the prolonged wait that may follow. Beyond mere inconvenience to passengers, it also entails wastage of aviation turbine fuel worth crores of rupees as planes hover in the air or wait in takeoff queue.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA) seems to have finally woken up to the problem and is taking steps to address the situation that not only cuts down on flight time but also reduces fuel consumption, thereby cutting down on carbon emission.
"The Indian aviation industry has to adopt Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) to solve the gridlock in Mumbai and Delhi. A system should be in place within the next 12-18 months," Airports Authority of India general manager (air traffic management) Chandan Sen told TOI. There are two primary contenders for delivering the software that will integrate all the information-American NextGen and European SESAR.
"Once the system is in place, flight-related information will flow seamlessly across all stakeholders. There is requirement of collaborative decision-making between air traffic, airport managers and airlines to enable the system to function properly. After all the relevant information is fed into the system, it can determine what time passengers on a Kolkata-Mumbai flight should board the aircraft so that there is least amount of waiting time both for takeoff in Kolkata and for landing in Mumbai," Sen explained. This can lead to an annual saving of 6 million kg of ATF costing around Rs 40 crore and reduce carbon emission by 18 million kg.

NEWS | American Airlines expands Curbside Check-in

American Airlines is expanding its Curbside Check-In service to give customers traveling internationally the opportunity to check their bags with the skycap as part of its drive to enhance the passenger experience.

Since September, American has been expanding the enhanced service to 28 airports that currently offer domestic Curbside Check-in, including American’s cornerstone markets—Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Miami and at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Thirty-one additional U.S. markets will offer the new services by the beginning of November.

“Offering Curbside Check-in for travel to international destinations is another way American is expanding its products and services to better meet the needs and desires of customers traveling abroad,” said Tom Del Valle, American’s Senior Vice President - Airport Services. “The new service offers a seamless transition from booking to boarding, and we look forward to the positive changes this will bring to our customers’ overall travel experience.”

Curbside Check-in gives customers the convenient opportunity to book, purchase and check-in from home, drop their bags curbside with a skycap and move directly through the security check-point to their gate in a smooth process. The service also provides flexibility for customers traveling with a large number of bags or who simply prefer to bypass the ticket counter.

NEWS | No disinvestment of Air India: Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi

Government today ruled out disinvestment of Air India saying it is trying to bring the cash strapped national carrier to 'no-profit, no-loss' status.

"There is no plan of disinvestment in Air India or to bring an IPO in the near future by the government. As a Civil Aviation Minister my first priority is to bring Air India in no-profit no-loss," Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said on the sidelines of a two-day international seminar.

The minister said that the Group of Ministers would meet soon to discuss the national carrier's health.

Addressing the seminar organised by the Air Traffic Control Guild here to mark the 100 year of Civil Aviation in India, Ravi said that government would soon look into the proposals and the recommendations of various committees and commissions for improving the work environment of ATC as per the International Civil Aviation Organisation standards.

He also assured that as per the ICAO recommendation, the government is planning to separate air traffic control from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

NEWS | Boeing ramps up 737 production

Boeing has begun building the first Next-Generation 737 at the program’s new production rate of 35 airplanes a month.

The rate is increasing from 31.5 airplanes a month to meet worldwide market demand for the best-selling single-aisle airplane.

Employees loaded chords and webs manufactured by the Boeing Fabrication division into the company’s newest automated spar assembly tool, the first visible step in the final assembly of the airplane.

The parts were then joined to make a spar, the main support structure for the wings.

“The start of spar assembly today demonstrates the progress the 737 team has made,” said Beverly Wyse, vice president and general manager of the 737 program.

“This is part of the series of rate increases to meet customer demand for the most popular airplane in aviation history.”

Boeing has taken a three-fold approach to prepare for the rate increases on the 737 program.

The company is making production processes more efficient by working with employee process improvement teams, increasing the production capacity with capital investments such as a new wings system installation line in the Renton factory and making the site footprint more efficient by moving some production areas, expanding others and decommissioning outdated equipment.

The automated spar assembly tool used to build the first spar is the ninth such machine at the Renton factory, drilling about 1,700 holes and inserting fasteners to make the spar.

The tool increases the 737’s wing-building capacity and is an example of one of many facilities changes happening at the Renton site to increase capacity and prepare for rate increases.

The 737 production rate will increase to 38 airplanes a month in the second quarter of 2013 and to 42 airplanes a month in the first half of 2014.

NEWS |British Airways demands Heathrow expansion

British Airways has once again called on the British government to urgently address the lack of new hub airport capacity in the south-east of England.

Responding to the government’s “Developing a sustainable framework for UK aviation” consultation, the airline warned that in order to support the UK economy there must be additional aviation capacity to meet growing demand for global connectivity.

In its submission, the airline argues that aviation supports more than 900,000 jobs in the UK and provides vital transport links for businesses across the country.

While London has developed one of the world’s best and most extensive networks of international air services, it is in danger of stagnating and falling behind competitors due to lack of new hub capacity.

Keith Williams, British Airways’ chief executive, said: “The government must take action now.

“There are no easy choices, but avoiding these choices is to undermine the UK aviation and aerospace industry and to hinder the economic recovery.”

He added: “We are already falling behind other European hubs in providing services to the booming markets of China and India.

“This will only continue unless the Government commits to allowing sustainable growth.

“The UK government has a choice. It can pursue sustainable growth, or simply manage a steady decline.”

A raft of privitisations are being considered as Ireland seeks to meet conditions imposed following a European Union/International Monetary Fund bailout.

Etihad chief executive James Hogan met prime minister Enda Kenny in Dublin earlier this month and “they spoke about Etihad possibly buying the government’s 25 per cent stake in Aer Lingus,” RTE said in the report.

NEWS | Air France-KLM boss quits

Pierre-Henri Gourgeon has stepped down as CEO of Air France and the Air France-KLM group, following pressure from the board of directors.

Having held the post since 2009, Gourgeon was expected to stay until 2013, but following a board meeting yesterday, it emerged that he had quit.

The news came amid reports of poor performance for the airline – with shares having fallen almost 53 percent in the past six months.

In addition there has been speculation that poor pilot training had been a factor in the 2009 crash that killed 228 people.

Air France-KLM is determined to “improve operating and financial performance in a context of economic uncertainties affecting European air traffic, as well as the position of Air France in respect of increased competition from new entrants.”
