NEWS | Drug smugglers fly off from Chennai as intel has fewer hands

A severe staff crunch in many of the country's intelligence agencies has led to several narcotics smugglers slipping out of the country easily. Helpless to nab the offenders despite tip-offs, officials end up passing the information to the foreign airport concerned where they are often arrested.
Agencies like Customs and the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) operate with just 50% of the sanctioned staff strength that was fixed in 1998.

The DRI's Chennai region, which should have 20 officers at the ground level collecting intelligence information and initiating raids, has just half that number. Chennai airport customs has one additional commissioner against the required six and one assistant commissioner against the 16 needed. The entire operation is done with just 14 appraisers. The sanctioned strength is 44.
